Nara Sento Guide: Eight Public Bathhouses by Area
Compare eight public baths across Nara Prefecture, including current admission, documented bath features, station access and details to confirm before visiting.
If you’re staying in Nara City, the three listed baths there are the natural place to start. For a different area, use the addresses below to see whether a sento fits your route. These are neighbourhood public baths, not a shortlist of confirmed natural hot springs. A name containing “onsen” or a carbonated or artificial bath does not, by itself, tell you where the water comes from.
The eight baths on the prefectural list
The prefecture’s current PDF lists the following eight establishments. The addresses are useful for map searches; check each bath’s current opening days and hours before setting out, as several publish little operating information online.
| Bath | Area and address | What is documented |
|---|---|---|
| Sakae Onsen | Kashihara — 826 Kume-cho | Included on the current prefectural list. Facility details and hours are not consistently published across current sources; confirm before visiting. |
| Goko Onsen | Tawaramoto — 203-4 Shinmachi | The local tourism association lists a main bath, electric, ultrasonic and bubble baths, a cold bath and a steam sauna. It is about a 10-minute walk from Kintetsu Tawaramoto and Nishi-Tawaramoto stations. |
| Takasago-yu | Yamatotakada — 4-36 Takasago-cho | A neighbourhood bath near JR Takada. The prefecture confirms its address and current listing; check locally for current hours and facilities. |
| Matsuyu | Yamatotakada — 8-13 Minamihonmachi | A second listed bath in Yamatotakada. Public facility information is sparse, so don’t assume it has the same baths, hours or rules as Takasago-yu. |
| Gose Takarayu | Gose — 361-5 Gokoku-dori | Two main tubs at 43°C and 41°C, plus a Finnish-style sauna. The outdoor cold bath and outdoor-air rest area are part of the sauna setup. |
| Hanazono Shin Onsen | Nara City — 13 Hanazono-cho | On the prefectural list for Nara City. Current first-party details on its bathing facilities and schedule are limited. |
| Hotei-yu | Nara City — 7 Hijitsuka-cho | Its own site describes high-purity softened water and an artificial hot-spring bath. That is a facility feature, not evidence of a natural spring. |
| Asahi Onsen | Nara City — 20 Kyobatechihigashigawa-cho | On the prefectural list near the Kyobate area. Confirm current bath features and hours with the facility before travelling. |

Where to look first
Nara City and the Kyobate area
Hotei-yu and Asahi Onsen are the two listed options around Kyobate; Hanazono Shin Onsen is another Nara City choice. Hotei-yu is the one with the clearest published distinction: its site describes softened water and an artificial hot-spring bath. Asahi Onsen is also commonly associated with a carbonated bath, but the facility’s current official information is difficult to verify online. Check before treating that feature—or any listed hours—as current.
If you want a larger natural-spring facility rather than a neighbourhood sento, compare the options in the Nara day-use onsen guide. The two categories answer different questions: a sento can be the easiest place for a local bath, while an onsen visit depends on the spring and the facility’s day-use rules.
Tawaramoto
Goko Onsen has the most detailed public facility listing outside Gose. Its local tourism-association page names several tubs and a steam sauna, gives a roughly 10-minute walk from Tawaramoto and Nishi-Tawaramoto stations, and lists a small car park. The same page currently gives opening hours of 4:00–9:30 p.m. on Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday, with Monday and Friday as closing days. Check the listing again before you go, especially if arriving late.
Kashihara, Yamatotakada and Gose
Sakae Onsen is in Kashihara; Takasago-yu and Matsuyu are both in Yamatotakada. The prefectural PDF confirms these locations, but not their live schedules. Since third-party listings can disagree on opening times, a phone call or same-day local check is safer than relying on an old directory entry.
Gose Takarayu is the easiest of this group to plan from official information. It opens 2:00–10:00 p.m. on weekdays and 11:00 a.m.–10:00 p.m. on weekends and public holidays, and closes on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month. JR Gose and Kintetsu Gose stations are both about a five-minute walk away. Standard adult admission is ¥530; sauna use adds ¥370. The two main tubs are listed at 43°C and 41°C. Its outdoor bath is a cold plunge for sauna users, not an outdoor natural hot spring.
Sento, artificial baths and natural hot springs
Sento means a public bathhouse; the name alone does not confirm a natural spring. Hotei-yu lists an artificial hot-spring bath. Current listings do not establish the spring type, pH or source temperature at the other seven baths.
If the water itself is the reason for your visit, use the Nara day-use onsen guide and check the operator’s spring details. If you need a private or family bath, start with the Nara private and family bath guide. For a plain-language explanation of how sento differ from onsen and large bathing complexes, see Sento, onsen and super sento: what’s the difference?.
Before you go
The prefectural list gives addresses, not live hours or visitor rules. Check the bath’s current schedule before travelling. Bring cash and a small towel unless the facility lists them; sauna use, shampoo and towel rental may cost extra. Tattoo rules vary by bath, so ask ahead if you have visible tattoos.
