Getting to Sukayu Onsen: Guest Shuttle or JR Bus?
Sukayu's free shuttle is for overnight guests and leaves Shin-Aomori at fixed times. The JR Bus also serves Aomori and Shin-Aomori.
Sukayu Onsen is in the Hakkoda mountains, not on Aomori’s urban bus network. The simplest route depends on whether you are staying at the inn and whether your train lines up with its shuttle. “Free” is useful only if the departure works for your day.
The hotel shuttle is convenient when its slots fit
The inn’s current access page lists free shuttle departures from Shin-Aomori Station’s east exit at 10:15 a.m. and 2 p.m. Return departures from Sukayu are listed at 8:50 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. The ride takes about an hour. You must be an overnight guest and reserve the seat when arranging your stay.
This is a good fit if you arrive by Shinkansen with luggage and can reach the east exit in time. On the way back, leave enough margin between the shuttle and your train; mountain traffic and weather can affect the drive. If your train arrives after 10:15, the next shuttle means a long wait, so compare the bus before committing to that plan.
The shuttle does not start at Aomori Airport. Sukayu’s access page says there is no direct bus from the airport; the drive is about an hour. If you are flying in, first plan the airport transfer to a rail or bus connection, then choose the shuttle or public route from there.
JR Bus gives you another departure point
JR Bus Tohoku serves the Sukayu Onsen stop from Aomori Station and Shin-Aomori Station. The inn gives approximate journey times of 70 minutes from Aomori and 80 minutes from Shin-Aomori. This is the public route, so it is available to day visitors as well as overnight guests. It is also useful when the inn’s fixed shuttle times do not match your train.
Do not plan from an old screenshot of the timetable. Service patterns change with the season, and mountain weather or road conditions can cause delays. Open the operator’s current route timetable for your travel date, then check that the return bus leaves enough time for your plans. For a day visit, compare that departure with the bath’s last admission rather than assuming a full afternoon is available.
Match the route to your station and next stop
If you are coming straight off a Shinkansen at Shin-Aomori and one of the guest-shuttle times fits, the inn’s vehicle avoids an extra transfer and carries your luggage into the mountains. If you stayed near central Aomori the night before, starting at Aomori Station on the JR Bus may be simpler than travelling across town to catch the shuttle.
For the return, work backward from your next train. The shuttle has two listed departures, not an on-demand service. A public bus may suit a departure between those windows, but verify the date-specific timetable before booking a tight rail connection.
Winter needs an extra check. Sukayu says JR Bus runs regularly year-round, while road restrictions or heavy snow can still affect travel. The inn also warns that some roads close overnight and recommends suitable winter tires or chains for drivers. If you are unfamiliar with snow driving, use public transport or the reserved guest shuttle where the timing works.
Still deciding whether to book a room? The Sukayu day trip or overnight guide weighs the bathing time against the extra night. If you have booked already, compare the Touji and Ryokan buildings before selecting a plan.

The shuttle requires an overnight reservation. Confirm both transport operators’ latest information before departure, especially in winter.
