Sukayu Onsen Day Trip: Baths, Hours and Getting There

Visit Sukayu’s Sen-nin-buro and women-only hour, with current entry prices, JR bus access and December 2026 changes in view.

Sukayu is a mountain hot spring, not a quick detour from central Aomori. The JR bus ride takes about 70 minutes each way, and its landmark bath, the 160-tatami Sen-nin-buro, is mixed bathing. Check the women-only hour and the return bus before you go; the day-use hours and adult price are also scheduled to change on December 1, 2026.

Day-use hours and admission

Sukayu’s official day-use page currently lists two schedules. The first applies through November 30, 2026; the new terms start the next day.

DatesSen-nin-buroTamano-yuAdult admission
Through Nov. 30, 20267 a.m.–6 p.m.; last entry 5:30 p.m. Women-only time: 8–9 a.m.9 a.m.–5 p.m.; last entry 4:30 p.m.¥1,000
From Dec. 1, 2026Both baths open 9 a.m.–4 p.m.; last entry 3:30 p.m.Included in the same day ticket¥1,500

Until November 30, elementary-school children pay ¥500; the current page does not list a separate preschool rate. From December 1, elementary-school admission remains ¥500 and preschool children enter free. The new ticket includes both baths, a rental bath towel and a face towel to take home. The vending machine takes cash only. Under the current ticket, both baths and the day-use rest areas are included, and the inn supplies a towel at the front desk.

That date change matters if you were counting on an early soak. Before December, the main bath opens at 7 a.m.; from December onward, day visitors cannot enter until 9 a.m. Check the official day-use notice again close to your visit in case the inn updates its terms.

Which bath should you use?

The Sen-nin-buro is the reason many people make the trip. Sukayu describes it as a 160-tatami bath hall built entirely from Hiba wood, with no pillars interrupting the space. Four pools or bathing areas draw from four different springs. The bath is mixed; its name refers to its scale, not a guarantee that it will be empty or private.

Women who want to bathe there without men present can use the published women-only window, 8–9 a.m. That hour is also available to day visitors under the current listing. The inn rents its own bathing garments for ¥500; rental is available from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. You may wear only garments sold or rented by Sukayu, not one brought from home. A bathing garment changes what you wear, not the shared nature of the room.

Tamano-yu is separated by gender throughout the day, so it is the straightforward option if mixed bathing is outside your comfort zone. It uses a different source from the Sen-nin-buro, though the inn describes both as cloudy, acidic sulfur springs. The official facility page specifically notes showers in the women’s Tamano-yu. If a shower is important to your plans, confirm the setup for the bath you will use rather than assuming every bathing area has the same facilities.

The water is strongly acidic

Sukayu’s five springs are all classified by the inn as acidic sulfur springs. Aomori’s tourism information gives a pH range of about 1.5–2.0 and warns that children’s skin and mucous membranes can be more sensitive. Keep the water away from eyes and mouth, and be cautious if you have irritated skin or small cuts. Anyone with a relevant health concern should ask a medical professional rather than treating an onsen visit as therapy.

The spring figure often quoted for Sukayu is not the measured temperature of every bathing pool. Nor does the name “Shibun-roku-bun no Yu” promise a fixed temperature. If you are sensitive to heat, test the water carefully and leave if you feel unwell.

Reaching Sukayu without a car

JR Bus Tohoku runs between Aomori Station and the stop in front of the inn, Sukayu Onsen-mae. The ride takes about 70 minutes from Aomori Station or 80 minutes from Shin-Aomori. The posted one-way fare from either Aomori station is ¥1,570. The bus also connects Sukayu with the ropeway area and, during the non-winter season, Oirase and Lake Towada.

Do not build the day around a timetable copied from another season. As of September 28, 2026, the operator’s autumn schedule runs through November 17; its winter service from November 12 serves Sukayu but does not continue to Oirase Gorge or Lake Towada. Some winter departures from Aomori or Shin-Aomori require advance reservations. The operator says the bus from Sukayu toward Aomori is unreserved. Check the date-specific timetable and booking rules on JR Bus Tohoku’s route page before setting out.

Start with the bus you can take home, then work backwards. Leave enough time to bathe, change and reach the stop without rushing. Sukayu’s complimentary shuttle from Shin-Aomori takes about an hour, but it is for overnight guests and must be reserved with a stay; it is not a day-trip transfer.

In winter, the Aomori–Sukayu bus continues to run, according to the inn, but mountain weather can still disrupt travel. Drivers need winter tires or chains, and the access page warns that a night gate closure or emergency road restriction may affect cars. If you are unfamiliar with snowy roads, the bus is the simpler plan—provided the day’s service is running.

Is a day trip enough?

For the baths alone, yes: allow a few hours on site and plan around the bus. It is less suitable as a casual stop between several mountain attractions, because the bus is not a city service and missing your connection has a larger cost. If you want to include the Hakkoda Ropeway or continue toward Oirase, compare the operating dates and return departures first. Our Hakkoda day-trip guide without a car looks at how the wider route fits together; for a room-and-transport decision, see Sukayu’s guest shuttle versus the JR bus.

Practical questions

Is the Sen-nin-buro still mixed bathing?

Yes. Sukayu lists a women-only hour from 8 to 9 a.m. and rents its own bathing garments. Tamano-yu is separated by gender all day.

Can I use both baths on a day visit?

The current ticket includes the Sen-nin-buro, Tamano-yu and day-use rest areas. The new ticket from December 1, 2026 also explicitly includes both baths.

Can I use the hotel shuttle as a day visitor?

No. The free shuttle from Shin-Aomori is for overnight guests and requires a reservation.

Is Sukayu open in winter?

The inn lists year-round regular JR bus service from Aomori, but schedules change and severe weather or road restrictions can interfere. Confirm transport conditions for your exact date.
