Fukagawa Onsen Tokiwayu: A Traditional Bathhouse with Unequal Sauna Setups
Tokiwayu charges ¥600 for its natural spring bath and sauna; the men’s side has an outdoor bath, while the women’s sauna exceeds 95°C.
The old roofline and coffered changing-room ceiling are still part of Fukagawa Onsen Tokiwayu’s appeal, even after its full 2023 renovation. The building is in the Morishita–Kiyosumi-Shirakawa area, close enough to work after a museum visit or dinner without making the bathhouse a separate cross-city excursion.
The renovated facility has a real natural spring, but its most practical distinction is how the two bathing sides differ. If you are choosing it for a particular sauna or outdoor feature, make sure you know which side applies to you before paying.
Men’s side: outdoor spring bath and a full sauna circuit
The men’s outdoor area contains the natural spring bath, cold bath and outdoor cooling seats. Its sauna combines a far-infrared heater with automatic water pouring; a hot-air cycle runs roughly every 20 minutes. The cold bath is adjusted to outdoor conditions and is listed around 12–17°C.
On the women’s side, the sauna is a far-infrared dry sauna listed at 95°C or higher. There is no outdoor bath or outdoor cooling area. Both sides have a natural spring bath, high-concentration carbonated bath, silky bath, jet bath and cold bath, but the outdoor arrangement is specifically men’s-only.
The natural spring is described by the operator as amber-coloured and slightly salty, a sodium-chloride cold mineral spring. The carbonated bath is separate; its pH figure describes that bath, not the spring water.
Time limits and sauna queues shape the visit
| Item | Weekday | Weekend / public holiday |
|---|---|---|
| Adult admission | ¥600 | ¥600 |
| Men’s sauna add-on | ¥500 | ¥600 |
| Women’s sauna add-on | ¥400 | ¥450 |
| Towel set | ¥200 | ¥200 |
The venue accepts cash, cards, electronic money and code payments.
Bath-only visits are limited to 70 minutes; sauna visits to 120 minutes. If the sauna is full, you cannot enter the baths first and wait inside. Staff issue a queue alarm and ask waiting guests to step outside until their turn, at which point bathing and sauna use begin together. Leave room in your itinerary for that outdoor wait, especially in the evening.
Tattoos are accepted only if they are small enough to be hidden by the palm of your hand. The facility’s FAQ also says sauna use is for junior-high-school age and older.
A convenient stop between Morishita and Kiyosumi-Shirakawa
Tokiwayu opens daily from noon until 12:30 a.m., with last reception at midnight; Thursday is its regular closing day. Morishita Station’s A7 exit is about a five-minute walk away, while Kiyosumi-Shirakawa Station’s A1 exit is roughly six minutes on foot.
The nearby Kiyosumi Garden, Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo and Fukagawa Edo Museum make it easy to place the bath into a local half-day. Drivers can use the facility’s six spaces outside and five partner spaces; the operator provides one hour of parking service, while queue time and time beyond that are paid by the visitor.
For the same side of Tokyo but a very different spring-water setup, see Kunitachi Yurakunosato only if you are travelling west; for another sento with bath and sauna trade-offs, compare Kaieiyu in Minowa.
