Musashikoyama Shimizuyu: Two Natural Springs for the Price of a Tokyo Sento

Shimizuyu in Shinagawa has two natural springs and ¥600 adult admission; check extra fees for the sauna and women’s bedrock bath.

Shimizuyu stands out for what is in the water, not for being the newest or quietest sauna in Tokyo. This neighbourhood sento in Musashikoyama has two separate natural springs: the dark amber Kuroyu and the deeper, yellow-brown Golden Spring. They are not one source with different names, and their water details should not be blended together.

The Golden Spring sits in an upper outdoor bath and is the rarest part of the visit. The Kuroyu is more widely used, including in an indoor bath and the cold bath. If you only have time for one soak, choose the spring you came to experience rather than trying to sample everything.

Two springs, two different bathing experiences

The Kuroyu is a dark, amber-coloured spring drawn from a shallower layer around 200 metres deep. The facility describes it as alkaline, and uses it in indoor and outdoor bathing; the cold bath also uses Kuroyu. That cold-bath temperature is a bathing-water reading, not the temperature of the source.

The Golden Spring is drawn from a much deeper layer, around 1,500 metres underground. It is a salty sodium-chloride spring, described in the current facility information as an iodine-containing spring. The upper outdoor bath is 100% source-fed. The tub is relatively small, so at popular times it may be occupied; the facility does not promise a quiet or empty visit.

These are distinct sources with separate chemistry. A pH or temperature listed for one should not be carried over to the other.

The bathhouse ticket is modest; the add-ons are clear

OptionPrice
Adult admission¥600
Dry sauna add-on¥500
Bath and sauna¥1,100
Women-only bedrock bath, including admission¥1,600

Adult hours are noon–midnight Monday through Saturday and public holidays, with an 8 a.m. Sunday opening. Monday is the regular closing day, except when a public holiday changes the schedule.

Shimizuyu retains the practical basics of a neighbourhood sento, rather than supplying every wash item like a large spa. Bring your toiletries or expect to buy a bath set on site. The facility lists ten parking spaces, with two hours free for bath guests, but availability is limited.

A conventional sauna, not an event-led one

The sauna is a dry cypress room listed around 90°C. It is a useful pause between spring baths, but the facility does not list automatic Löyly or a scheduled towel-performance cycle. For sauna-first visitors, that distinction may matter more than the extra ¥500.

For women, the bedrock bath is a separate longer-stay option; it is not a sauna add-on and is not available to men. The public information describes it as a women-only plan that includes admission.

A Sunday morning can be busy

Musashikoyama Station on the Tokyu Meguro Line is around a five-minute walk. The bathhouse pairs naturally with the nearby Palm shopping arcade, Meguro or Rinshinomori Park.

Sunday opening at 8 a.m. is convenient, but early does not mean empty: the Golden Spring tub has limited capacity, and weekend periods can be busy. If that particular bath is the reason for coming, leave room to wait and avoid assuming that every pool will be immediately available.

If you have a tattoo, confirm admission with Shimizuyu before visiting. For a comparison with other traditional-modern bathhouses around Tokyo, read the modern sento guide.
