Lake Toya Day Trip or Overnight? The Fireworks and Bus Timetables Decide
A day trip works for one main attraction and a bath. Stay overnight for the 2026 Lake Toya fireworks or to split the lakeside and Mt. Usu into separate days.
Lake Toya can work as a day trip from Sapporo if the plan is modest: one main stop, time by the water and one bath. The case for staying overnight becomes much clearer during the 2026 Long Run Fireworks season. The show starts at 20:45, after the last direct bus to Sapporo and the last local bus to JR Toya Station have left.
A day trip has room for one main outing and a bath
Lake Toya’s lakeside hot-spring district and the Mt. Usu–Showa Shinzan area sit on separate outing routes. Combining both is possible with a car and a carefully timed day; by public transport, transfers and service gaps can eat into the time between them. For a relaxed day trip, pick one: spend the day around the lake, or visit Showa Shinzan and Mt. Usu, then return for a bath if the bus schedule lines up.
The direct Sapporo coach takes about 2 hours 45 minutes each way.
It costs ¥3,700 per adult one way (about HK$186 / NT$756), and the service is reservation-only.
That is a long return journey for a short stop, so leave room for delays and avoid stacking a ropeway, sightseeing boat, several baths and dinner into one day. The day-use bath comparison helps narrow down a single facility.
Fireworks season makes the overnight decision simple
The 45th Lake Toyako Long Run Fireworks Display is scheduled nightly from 28 April through 31 October 2026, from 20:45 for about 20 minutes. The lakeside show can be cancelled in unstable wind, so it is a lovely evening plan rather than a guaranteed reason to book the most expensive room.
The timetable is the catch for day visitors. The current local bus from Toyako Onsen to JR Toya Station has a final departure at 18:50, while the Sapporo-bound direct coach leaves at 17:10. Neither gets you home after a 20:45 show. Unless you have a car, a pre-arranged private ride or another confirmed late-night option, book a room if seeing the fireworks matters.
An overnight stay gives Mt. Usu its own half-day
A simple two-day rhythm is easier on the clock: arrive, check in and keep the first evening for the lakeshore; visit Mt. Usu and Showa Shinzan the next morning before continuing to your next stop. The ropeway area is not a quick walk from the lakeside hotels, and its operating hours vary by season, so check the current schedule before deciding which day to go.
Staying also helps with late arrivals from New Chitose. The rail route reaches JR Toya Station before the local connection into the resort; if your flight lands late, check that final bus before committing to the same-day transfer. The Sapporo and New Chitose transport guide covers the bus and rail options, while where to stay in Toyako Onsen breaks down the hotel areas.
Outside the long-run season, decide by the day’s pace
The 2026 nightly display ends on 31 October. In other months, a day trip is reasonable if you are happy to leave after an afternoon bath and do not need a slow dinner by the lake. An overnight stay makes more sense when your arrival is late, you want both the lakeside and volcanic sights, or you would rather avoid watching the clock between a bath and a return connection.
There may be separate seasonal events in winter, but their dates are not interchangeable with the summer fireworks calendar. Check the association’s event listing for the year you travel. For a no-car trip, the best test is simple: if the evening activity ends after the last useful bus, stay locally; if not, keep the day trip focused and choose your return before you set out.
