Tochi-no-yu in Unazuki: A Lakeside Onsen Worth the Detour?
Plan a visit to Tochi-no-yu by Unazuki Lake: ¥510 entry, seasonal winter closure, car access and the one-hour walk from town.
At Tochi-no-yu, the view is part of the bath: the open-air pool faces Unazuki Lake and the mountains of the Kurobe Gorge, with the gorge railway sometimes visible on the far side. That makes it a good detour if you already have a car and want the landscape to be the main event. It is a poor last-minute add-on if you have only an hour or are relying on the train.
The facility lists adult admission at ¥510, opening hours of 10 a.m.–5 p.m. and last entry at 4:30 p.m. It closes for winter, usually from early December until mid-to-late April. The exact return date can move with snow and road conditions.
Check the operating notice before you go
Tochi-no-yu’s official site lists ¥510 admission for adults, ¥250 for elementary and junior-high students, and free entry for younger children. Shampoo, conditioner, body wash and hair dryers are provided. Face towels cost ¥300; bath towels are neither sold nor rented, so bring one if you need it. Lockers for larger bags use a refundable ¥100 coin.
The latest notice available at this check was posted September 21, 2026. It said a power outage had been resolved and staff were preparing to reopen around noon that day. The site had also reported a temporary closure during the summer road disruption before announcing an August 29 reopening.
Check the homepage on your travel day rather than relying only on fixed hours. The fixed phone line was reported out of service, with email provided for enquiries.
During the operating season, the facility says it is open daily unless a temporary closure is announced. Winter closure generally runs from early December through the middle or latter part of April. Do not plan a spring visit around an assumed opening date until the year’s notice is posted.
The lake view is the reason to come
The indoor bath also uses natural hot-spring water and has large windows, but the outdoor pool is the more memorable part of a visit. It looks over the lake and gorge rather than a town street. The trolley train can be seen crossing the gorge when a service passes and sightlines are clear; it is not a scheduled show, so treat a train sighting as a bonus rather than a promise.
The spring is described as a weakly alkaline simple hot spring, sourced from Kuro-nagi. The regional association lists 87.8°C at the source. That figure does not tell you the bathing-pool temperature, and the facility does not publish a pool-by-pool operating temperature on its visitor page.
Reaching the bath: easy by car, a real walk without one
From Unazuki Onsen Station, the facility lists about 10 minutes by car. There is free parking for 35 cars. The facility lists a 25-minute drive from Kurobe IC.
On foot, the route from Unazuki Onsen Station takes about an hour each way via the Yamabiko promenade. That turns a bath into a half-day outing, not a quick wash between trains. The promenade is closed in winter and is not for night walking; it has unlit stretches. A seasonal low-speed electric bus has also served the route, but its operation and departure dates vary. Confirm that it is running on your date before relying on it.
For a no-car visit, the practical verdict is possible, but not convenient. Go in daylight, leave a generous return margin before last entry, and do not force the walk if rain, darkness or tired legs make the path a bad choice. If the goal is simply to bathe near the station, Yumedomokoro Unazuki stays open later and is only a short walk away.
Build the stop around the season
Tochi-no-yu fits naturally with a drive around Unazuki Dam and the lake. The route is most appealing when the mountains and water are visible; low cloud or heavy rain can erase much of the view while leaving the travel time unchanged. Leave enough daylight for the return drive, and check road notices after storms.
The admission fee is modest, but the total cost includes the detour and whatever transport you need. For a visitor staying in town without a car, Yamanoha is much closer to the station, while the public bath at Yumedomokoro has the longest hours.
