Yokayu or Seiunsou? Unzen’s Private Baths Compared

Compare Unzen Yokayu and Seiunsou private baths for two adults, including total fees, bath time, booking rules, spring details and family use.

Both Unzen Yokayu and Seiunsou let a couple or family use a bath together, but they sell different kinds of visit. Yokayu is the lower-cost option: six private family-bath rooms, each charged by the hour, with admission added per person. Seiunsou costs more and gives you a ryokan setting with public indoor and outdoor baths alongside its private room.

Choose Yokayu when the private room is the main event

Yokayu’s private room lets a couple bathe together or a parent help a child without splitting up for gender-separated public baths. The current two-adult and family totals are shown in the comparison above.

There are six family-bath rooms, but the operator does not publish capacity and features for each one. It also does not promise that all six have an outdoor tub or let guests request a specific room. If you need step-free access, a particular layout or an open-air bath, call before setting out.

The tourism bureau and Yokayu’s own rate page list different room and admission charges. The table uses Yokayu’s current operator rates; confirm the breakdown with the bathhouse if the exact bill matters.

Seiunsou costs more because it is a fuller bath visit

At Seiunsou, the private-room charge is separate from regular admission. The table shows the combined visit totals before towels.

The extra cost is easier to explain if you will also use the public baths. Seiunsou’s public outdoor pool is the stronger choice for a forest setting, and the property also has indoor baths and a rest area. Its operator says the outdoor, indoor and private baths all use free-flowing spring water. The private room itself is not described as an open-air bath, though; do not use photos of the public outdoor pool to infer its layout.

Day visitors cannot reserve the private bath in advance. Overnight guests may book ahead; day visitors ask at reception after arriving. Day use is listed from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., with private-bath reception ending at 5 p.m. If you need a fixed time, contact the ryokan and keep a public-bath alternative in mind.

The water is not a simple winner-and-loser comparison

Yokayu identifies its source as Unzen Yusato, a simple sulphur spring with pH 2.3 and a listed source temperature of 41.7°C. Those are source details, not a temperature table for its six private baths. The operator describes its water as 100% free-flowing, but does not publish room-by-room information about tub temperature, cooling, circulation or disinfection.

Seiunsou lists Unzen Onsen (Kojigoku), a simple sulphur spring of the hydrogen-sulphide type. Its latest analysis lists 51.1°C at the source, while older descriptive copy still refers to a different temperature range. It explains that local spring water may be used to cool the water before it reaches a bath when needed, and says its tubs are drained and cleaned daily. The property’s general introduction gives pH 4.3; its 2026 analysis sheet includes more precise field and laboratory measurements.

The sources and published operating details differ. A lower pH number is not a quality ranking, and source temperature does not tell you the exact temperature of the bath you will use. Anyone with sensitive skin should follow the posted bathing guidance and keep a first soak short.

For families, the right answer depends on the second bath

Yokayu is easier to recommend when the shared private room solves the whole problem: bathe together, help a child, then leave. Its lower total also makes it an easier fit if the family is not planning to use a larger public bath afterward.

Seiunsou makes more sense when the private soak is one part of a longer visit. Its public outdoor bath adds a different experience, and the indoor facilities give the group somewhere to continue after the private slot. However, school groups sometimes use the indoor and private baths, temporarily limiting access for other visitors. Check the property’s dated notices if the private room is the reason for your trip.

A note on reaching each property

Yokayu is about a three-minute walk from the Kojigoku-iriguchi bus stop according to the Unzen tourism bureau. Seiunsou lists the same stop as its nearest bus stop and describes the ryokan as about a 12-minute walk away; it also says local transfers may be available, which should be arranged directly with the property. The two walk estimates refer to different destinations, not the short walk between them.

If you are relying on a bus, work backward from the return service rather than the bath’s closing time. Yokayu’s current operator pages do not clearly set out all day-use hours or the private-bath waiting system, so confirm those details if you expect to arrive late or need a specific room. More options are in the Unzen day-use bath guide.

The short decision

Yokayu is the better value when all you need is an hour of privacy together. Seiunsou is worth considering when you want a broader ryokan bathing experience and will use its outdoor or indoor public baths too. Neither page gives enough information to guarantee a particular private-room layout, so ask first if an open-air tub or accessibility feature is essential.
