Kumamoto to Unzen Onsen by Ferry: The Shimabara Port Transfer

If you are already in Kumamoto, crossing Ariake Bay is a sensible way to reach Unzen. The route is Kumamoto City to Kumamoto Port, ferry to Shimabara Port, then a Shimabara Railway bus up to Unzen Onsen. That last bus matters: the ferry gets you across the water, not to the hot-spring town.

There are two ferries. Ocean Arrow takes about 30 minutes; Kyusho Ferry takes about an hour and has a reserved, free shuttle between JR Kumamoto Station and the port on many sailings. For a car-free trip, that shuttle can make Kyusho the simpler departure even though its crossing is slower. Your arrival time in Unzen still depends on the bus from Shimabara Port, so check that leg before choosing a sailing.

Choose the ferry around the bus up the mountain

Both operators run several sailings a day. Compare crossing time and fares first; then check which arrival connects with the Shimabara bus.

Ocean Arrow’s listed Kumamoto departures are:

An additional 6:30 p.m. sailing runs on weekends and public holidays from April through December.

Kyusho Ferry’s regular departures are spread across the day:

The 7:10 p.m. sailing is not a regular daily service; the operator lists it only for specific holiday periods.

Kyusho saves ¥420 on the adult fare but takes roughly 30 minutes longer. The faster crossing is useful if it connects with an earlier Shimabara Port bus or helps you reach a fixed check-in or dinner time. If you would wait for the same uphill bus either way, it may not shorten the overall journey.

Getting from Kumamoto Station to the ferry terminal

The two ferry companies handle this leg differently. Kyusho Ferry runs a dedicated free shuttle between JR Kumamoto Station’s Shinkansen exit and Kumamoto Port, with departures timed to connect with many sailings. For example, its published regular schedule pairs a 9:05 am station shuttle with a 9:50 am ferry. It is not a general port bus: reserve the ferry-and-shuttle combination by phone by 5 pm the day before, and confirm which sailings have a connection.

The company warns that luggage space is limited and that the shuttle may be suspended without notice; it also suspends the service on some busy holiday periods.

Ocean Arrow passengers can use the Kyushu Sanko route bus from Kumamoto Station or Sakuramachi Bus Terminal to Kumamoto Port. Check the current port-bound bus timetable against the ferry departure rather than relying on a car journey estimate. Kumamoto Ferry lists the port as about 13 km from Kumamoto Station and 14 km from Sakuramachi by road; those are driving distances, not bus travel times.

If you are arriving by Shinkansen, the Kyusho shuttle is convenient when its reserved bus fits your train arrival and you are travelling with manageable bags. For oversized luggage, a missed shuttle, or a sailing without a connection, arrange another ride to the port and leave a proper check-in margin.

Shimabara Port is a transfer point, not the end of the trip

At Shimabara Port, change to a Shimabara Railway bus bound for Unzen. The port stop is beside the ferry terminal, but departures are limited, and the road climbs into the mountains. Don’t build the plan around a five-minute ferry-to-bus change. Give yourself time to disembark, collect your bags and find the right stop; road or sea conditions can also shift arrival times.

Allow about 20–30 minutes as a planning buffer, not as a guaranteed connection window. If the next bus is later, do not assume a taxi or extra service will be available.

Shimabara Railway has announced a bus timetable revision for October 1, 2026, including changes to operating days, frequencies and routes. The timetable currently in force through September 30 should not be used for later travel.

Check the operator’s stop-by-stop timetable for your date and direction, and confirm that the departure from Shimabara Port actually serves your destination in Unzen. Some services continue beyond the central Unzen stop toward Kojigoku or Seiunso; don’t assume every bus does.

The central hot-spring district is walkable from its main bus stop. If your ryokan is outside the centre, confirm the nearest stop and any pickup arrangement before you book; not every bus continues to Kojigoku or Seiunso.

For a one-night stay, compare the central district with Kojigoku before booking. Staying centrally reduces the final walk with bags and keeps dinner and the ¥200 bathhouses close; a Kojigoku stay can suit a bath-focused trip, but may need a confirmed inn pickup or a bus that serves the exact stop. Is this a good day trip from Kumamoto?

It can work, but a day trip has two connections to protect in each direction: ferry and bus. Before leaving Kumamoto, identify the return ferry from Shimabara and then work backward to the bus down from Unzen. A late bath, a long lunch or one missed bus can take away the margin you expected to spend in the hot-spring town.

For a short visit, stay near the central bus stop and choose one bath in advance. The Unzen day-use onsen guide compares options in town and around Kojigoku. If you want time for dinner, an outlying bath or an unhurried walk through Unzen Jigoku, staying overnight is less dependent on the last connection.

Travellers starting in Nagasaki, Isahaya or Hakata usually have a more direct rail-and-bus route than travelling west to Kumamoto first. See the car-free Unzen day-trip guide for those approaches.

Bath rules and spring details are outside the ferry operators’ remit. If tattoo access or water type affects your plan, check the specific bath or inn after you have settled on a route.

Taking a car across

Both operators carry vehicles, but the fare depends on vehicle length and is separate from the cost of moving people in some fare tables. Compare the full vehicle fare, any extra passenger fares, and your plans after Unzen. Bringing a car makes more sense if you will continue around the Shimabara Peninsula or Obama; for one night in Unzen before returning by public transport, the port-to-town bus may be less hassle than arranging a one-way rental and ferry crossing.
