Unzen Onsen Without a Car: Bus Routes and a Realistic Day Trip

Nagasaki’s direct bus leaves about five hours in Unzen for Jigoku, lunch and one bath. From the airport or Hakata, an Isahaya transfer makes the day tighter.

The easiest car-free day trip to Unzen starts in Nagasaki City: take the direct express bus to the Unzen Information Center, walk through Unzen Jigoku, then choose one bath before returning. The direct bus currently takes about 1 hour 41 minutes each way. From Nagasaki Airport or Hakata, the route involves a transfer at Isahaya, and a same-day visit becomes much tighter.

The direct bus from Nagasaki is the cleanest option

The April 1, 2026 timetable lists the Nagasaki–Obama–Unzen express leaving Nagasaki Station at 9:10 a.m. and reaching Unzen at 10:51 a.m. Return departures are 9:10 a.m., 1:10 p.m. and 4:10 p.m.; the last reaches Nagasaki Station at 5:51 p.m. The 9:10 arrival and 4:10 return leave about five hours for the Jigoku walk, lunch and one bath.

The digital round-trip ticket from Nagasaki Station to Unzen costs ¥3,420 (about HK$172 / NT$699). It is sold through the myroute and STLOCAL apps and is valid for four days from the travel date. Ordinary cash fares are shown by the route timetable. Seats are not reserved: boarding is in line, and buses can be delayed by road conditions. If you are travelling on a date after this timetable’s validity changes, check the operator’s fare and timetable search again.

The 4:10 pm bus leaves from the Unzen area, not from the bath door. Leave time to change, walk back to the correct stop and board before departure. For a bath in the central area, starting that return walk around 3:20 pm gives some margin. A stop near Kojigoku has a separate stop, but confirm the exact service and boarding point before relying on it.

A five-hour visit has room for one bath

The Unzen bus stop and visitor information centre put the Jigoku trail within walking distance. Allow roughly 45–70 minutes for the geothermal area, depending on how often you stop. After lunch, pick one bath rather than trying to cross between several neighbourhoods. The Unzen day-use bath guide compares the local ¥200 bathhouses, Kojigoku, Yokayu and Seiunsou; this route works best when the bath choice is made before you board the bus.

Unzen is a hill resort, and some baths sit away from the central bus area. A map may make the distances look modest, but steep roads and limited connecting buses can eat into the return buffer. For a first day trip, a central bath keeps the plan less fragile. If a private bath or a specific ryokan facility is essential, consider staying overnight instead of trying to fit it around the last direct bus.

From Nagasaki Airport, transfer at Isahaya

Nagasaki Prefectural Bus runs an airport–Isahaya service, so reaching Isahaya does not depend on the separate Shimabara Railway airport line. Shimabara Railway currently reports that its own Hon-Isahaya Station–Nagasaki Airport buses are suspended until further notice. From Isahaya, continue toward Unzen on the Shimabara Peninsula bus network, checking the date-specific departure before you leave the airport.

This transfer is possible, but the connection determines how long you get in Unzen. A late flight arrival can turn the day into little more than the Jigoku walk and an early return. Check both legs together, including the return connection from Unzen to Isahaya; do not plan around a bus shown in an older blog timetable.

Hakata is a long day, not a casual add-on

From Hakata, travel by rail to Isahaya and transfer to a bus for Unzen. Shimabara Railway has announced an autumn bus timetable revision effective October 1, 2026, and the transfer tables published for August and September are not valid after September 30. The replacement timetable should be checked directly with the operator before booking a same-day itinerary.

Even with a workable connection, allow the day for Unzen itself: Jigoku, a meal and one bath. Adding Obama, Nita Pass or Shimabara creates more transfers and leaves little recovery time if a bus runs late. An overnight stay is the sensible choice when you want a private bath, dinner or an unhurried evening walk.
