How to Get to Ureshino Onsen from Hakata, Nagasaki and the Airports

Compare the shinkansen and Kyushugo bus routes to Ureshino Onsen. Find out which services reach the old town and how to travel from Nagasaki Airport.

There are two useful arrival points in Ureshino: Ureshino-Onsen Station, served by the Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen, and Ureshino Bus Center, in the older hot-spring town. They are not interchangeable. If you arrive by train, you still need a local bus, a hotel pickup or a taxi to reach many inns and baths; a Kyushugo coach that actually stops at the bus center can leave you closer to the town streets.

The best route depends on where you start and which stop your particular service uses. Check the operator’s timetable for the exact travel date before buying a ticket: the Hakata–Nagasaki highway service has variants, and not every one calls at Ureshino Bus Center.

From Hakata: train for a quick rail connection, coach for the town centre

The standard rail route is the Relay Kamome limited express from Hakata to Takeo-Onsen, followed by a same-platform transfer to the Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen Kamome. JR Kyushu describes the transfer at Takeo-Onsen as an opposite-side platform change. The shinkansen stops at Ureshino-Onsen Station, not in the old town.

If your accommodation is near Siebold no Yu or the Ureshino Bus Center, allow time for the last leg. JR Kyushu Bus runs the Ureshino Line between Takeo-Onsen Station, Ureshino-Onsen Station and the bus center, but departures are not something to assume will meet every train. A taxi or hotel pickup may make more sense with bulky bags or a tight check-in window. The Ureshino day-use bath guide covers what is near the older town centre once you arrive; the Kyushu family onsen guide looks at how the area fits into a slower family itinerary.

The highway coach Kyushugo is worth comparing when you want fewer transfers. The published adult one-way fare from Fukuoka to Ureshino is ¥2,200, and the return ticket is ¥4,000. Some services stop at Ureshino Bus Center; others use Ureshino Interchange instead. The bus operator says the interchange is about a ten-minute drive from the town centre, so a ticket marked “Ureshino IC” still leaves you with a local transfer to arrange.

From Fukuoka Airport: check the terminal and the stop name

Some Kyushugo services run from Fukuoka Airport’s International Terminal to Ureshino. The tourism association gives the ride to Ureshino Bus Center as about 80 minutes, but the bus stop and service pattern matter: confirm that your chosen departure goes to the centre rather than only Ureshino IC.

If you land at the Domestic Terminal, the airport’s free shuttle connects it with the International Terminal. Factor in the shuttle wait and the time needed to reach the coach platform; a tight connection can erase the convenience of a direct bus. The rail alternative is to travel to Hakata and take the train via Takeo-Onsen, with a separate connection from Ureshino-Onsen Station into town.

From Nagasaki: direct coach to town or shinkansen to the station

From Nagasaki city, you can choose between a Kyushugo coach and the Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen. The coach fare table lists Nagasaki–Ureshino at ¥1,800 one way, or ¥3,400 for a return ticket. As on the Fukuoka route, check the destination stop on the individual service before booking: Ureshino Bus Center is the convenient town stop, while Ureshino IC is outside the centre.

By rail, take Kamome north to Ureshino-Onsen Station. This avoids the highway journey but does not remove the local transfer. From either arrival point, check how you will reach the inn before setting off, especially if you are heading out after the last useful local bus.

From Nagasaki Airport: use Shin-Omura, not the old Sonogi connection

An older route plan sent travellers from Nagasaki Airport to Sonogi and then by local bus to Ureshino. JR Kyushu Bus discontinued the Ureshino–Sonogi section on September 30, 2025, so that transfer no longer works as described.

The airport’s current access information lists a Saihi Bus service to Shin-Omura Station for ¥310. From there, take the Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen one stop to Ureshino-Onsen Station, then arrange the local bus, taxi or hotel pickup into town. The airport-to-station bus can be delayed by road conditions, so leave a sensible margin before a reserved train. A direct taxi is another possibility, but agree the destination and fare with the operator before departure.

The Bus Center has a waiting room and toilets, but Kyushugo notes that only a limited number of its services stop there. It has no ticket counter or reservation desk, so buy or reserve your coach ticket before arriving. The operator says Ureshino IC has roughly hourly service and is about ten minutes away by car; that does not mean there will be a shuttle waiting for you.

If you are arriving for an early soak, compare your arrival with the bath’s opening time and the local bus schedule; the Ureshino guide for an early-morning onsen explains why the shinkansen station is not a walk-up substitute for the old town. Travellers with mobility concerns may also want the senior-friendly Kyushu destination notes, while the solo onsen guide covers the practical question of reaching dinner from an inn.
