Do not plan a bath here during the current closure

Hatoko no Yu, a day-use bathhouse in Kaminoseki at the southeastern tip of Yamaguchi Prefecture, is closed for renovation from August 17 through October 31, 2026. The facility announced that period on August 16; Kaminoseki Town says the work could run beyond October 31 and that it will issue another notice if the schedule changes. As of September 27, neither the facility homepage nor its news list shows a reopening announcement.

That makes the practical answer straightforward: do not count on bathing here during the closure, and do not assume it will reopen on November 1. For a later visit, check the facility’s news page or call before setting out. The published prices and operating hours below are useful as a pre-renovation reference only; the operator has not confirmed whether they will remain unchanged.

Why people make the detour

The main draw is the open-air bath looking across the Seto Inland Sea. Inside, the two bathing areas have different finishes: Ishi no Yu is dark and stone-led, while Ki no Yu uses cypress accents and feels brighter. The men’s and women’s sides switch every Monday, so photographs of one layout do not tell you which bath a particular visitor will use.

The spring comes from about 1,000 metres underground. Its published classification is an iron-bearing sodium-chloride cold mineral spring, with a source temperature of 22.8°C and an output of 95 litres per minute. Those figures describe the source, not the bath temperature. The operator says it heats the water, circulates and filters it, and uses hypochlorite for hygiene; seasonal baths may also use bath additives.

There is a useful distinction between the pools. The open-air baths use source water, while the indoor white-water bath uses spring water after manganese and iron have been removed. That does not mean the outdoor pools are untreated: the facility does not publish pool-by-pool exceptions to its heating, circulation and disinfection practices. If you compare facilities by water handling, see our guides to reading Japanese onsen water temperatures and understanding spring-water classifications.

Getting there without relying on an old timetable

The Yamaguchi Prefecture tourism site gives the bus journey from JR Yanai Station to the “Hatoko no Yu-mae” stop as about 50 minutes, followed by a one-minute walk. It also estimates about 50 minutes by car from either the Kumage or Kuga interchange. Driving is the simpler option if you want to fit the bath around other stops in Kaminoseki; the roadside station, Michi-no-Eki Kaminoseki Kaikyo, is about a minute away by car according to the facility.

The bus stop is close, but the timetable needs attention. Kaminoseki Town publishes separate weekday and weekend/holiday timetables for its two town-bus routes, while Bōchō Kotsu announced timetable changes for the Yanai–Hirao–Kaminoseki area from October 1, 2026. Check the route and return service for your exact travel date rather than carrying over an older schedule. In particular, do this again if visiting after the renovation, when the current timetable may no longer apply.
