Jotei no Yu in Narada

The two baths are close to one another in Narada, but their day-use setup is quite different. Jotei no Yu has the longer opening window and a place to rest and eat. Shirane-kan charges more and keeps visits short, with the appeal centred on its sulfur-rich spring and changing water colour. In this mountain valley, check the road and the return bus before deciding which bath to visit.

Jotei no Yu works better for a half-day in Narada

Jotei no Yu reopened on April 1, 2026, after renovation work focused on ageing facilities and insulation. Its operator lists bathing from 9 am to 7 pm, with last admission at 6:30 pm, and no regular closing day. From December through June, Thursday is an unstaffed bathing-only day; do not expect the restaurant and staffed services to operate as usual then.

The bath has cedar tubs and source-flowing water. The operator describes it as a relatively gentle soak, and there is a rest area and restaurant if the bus timetable leaves you a few hours in Narada. That makes it the more flexible choice when the bath is only one part of the outing.

Shirane-kan is about the water, not an all-afternoon stay

Shirane-kan’s official day-use page sets different closing times for weekdays and weekends, with admission ending 30 minutes before closing. It is closed every Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. There is no reservation for a standard bath, though the operator says busy periods can involve a wait.

The current spring analysis lists a sulfur-sodium chloride spring at 47.9°C, pH 9.0 and about 70 litres per minute. The bath is supplied with 100% source water without dilution; heat exchange is used to control the temperature. The operator notes that the water may occasionally shift from clear to green or cloudy, with sulfur scent and mineral deposits also varying. The bathing room can be slippery, so take care on wet floors.

At ¥1,000, a two-hour maximum and no on-site meal service, this is a more deliberate stop. Towels are not rented, and payment is cash only. The operator does offer a separate reserved private-room rest plan on weekends, but that is not included in ordinary admission.

Allow for the trip back

Narada is a long way into Hayakawa’s mountain road network. The municipal shared bus is infrequent, and road closures can affect access. Check the current timetable in both directions and the prefectural road-restriction notice before setting out. Shirane-kan’s calendar has recorded closures caused by a road restriction; the fixed weekly closing days are not the only possible reason a visit may fail.
