Zao in November 2026: Sky Cable or Zao Ropeway?
The Nov 4–27, 2026 maintenance closure affects the Central Ropeway and No. 1 Lift. Sky Cable serves the Central Highlands; Zao Ropeway goes to Jizo Summit.
Checked: September 27, 2026 Zao’s November 4–27 maintenance window affects one cableway system, not every lift on the mountain. The Central Ropeway and Central No. 1 Lift are scheduled to be out of service; the operator says the Sky Cable will run for visitors heading to the Central Highlands. Zao Ropeway is a separate system serving Jizo Summit, so it is not covered by that closure notice.
Start with the place you want to reach. The two routes are not cheaper and more expensive versions of the same ride.
For Dokko Pond and the Central Highlands
During the maintenance period, take the Sky Cable from Uwanodai Station to Central Highland Station. The ride takes about eight minutes, departs as groups are ready and is currently listed at ¥1,300 one way or ¥2,400 return for adults. The Central Ropeway’s usual route from Onsen Station to Torikabuto is unavailable on these dates, and the Central No. 1 Lift cannot be used as a shortcut.
Dokko Pond is in the Central Highlands at roughly 1,400 metres. The operator’s green-season walking route links the pond with the Central Highland station, but November ground conditions can change the time and difficulty. Check the day’s service and trail conditions before setting out; a short summer estimate is not a winter guarantee.
For Jizo Summit
Take Zao Ropeway from Zao Sanroku Station via Juhyo Kogen Station to Jizo Summit Station, which stands at 1,661 metres. The operator lists the summit round trip at ¥4,400 for adults. This is the route for the Jizo statue and the summit area; it does not take you to Dokko Pond.
November weather can still suspend service. Check both the lower and summit lines before travelling, and do not plan a summit walk around the cableway timetable alone. The footwear guide for early snow and ice explains when to keep the visit close to the station.
What to do outside the maintenance dates
The announced closure applies only to November 4–27, 2026. Outside those dates, service still depends on the operating calendar, maintenance and weather. Check the operator’s live status rather than assuming that a route is open because it is normally seasonal.
If your main goal is central highland scenery, compare the Sky Cable’s landing point with the walking you are comfortable doing. If Jizo Summit is the priority, choose Zao Ropeway and treat visibility and wind as the day’s deciding factors.
