Choose Showaen for a bath in your own cottage. Yumesaki suits guests who want private baths outside the room and a meal-led stay.

Beppu Showaen: the room itself is the onsen plan
Showaen has nine detached cottages set around a garden, each with a private natural hot-spring bath. Depending on the cottage, it is either a hinoki indoor bath or a rock-built outdoor bath. Check the room description if an open-air bath is important.
The spring is listed as a sodium-sulfate / bicarbonate spring, with a source temperature of 68°C, pH 8.1 and a flow rate of 50 litres per minute. Showaen describes the baths as free-flowing, with water added to adjust the temperature. The source temperature is not the bathing temperature.
Guests also have access to gender-separated outdoor baths and two private family baths, Sen no Yu and Man no Yu. The private baths are complimentary and used in 50-minute turns. If you choose a room with an indoor bath, these give you another way to bathe together without paying for a specific outdoor-bath cottage.
The main compromise is getting there. Showaen offers complimentary pickup and drop-off for overnight guests from Beppu Station, Beppu Kitahama or the station-front area, but pickup is scheduled between 2 and 5 pm and return trips between 9 and 11 am. It is not an on-demand taxi replacement. If you arrive late, leave early, or expect to come and go from central Beppu, a station hotel is easier.
Kappo Ryokan Yumesaki: a quieter, food-led stay
Yumesaki has seven rooms and a more intimate feel than a large resort hotel. Its three private baths are a hinoki indoor bath, a seasonal herbal bath and a semi-open-air Ten-sho-seki stone bath. All are described as 100% free-flowing hot spring water. There is no advance time-slot booking: guests use a bath when it is free. That keeps the arrangement flexible, though dinner time and late evening can be busy.
The spring is a simple hot spring, with a source temperature of 52°C and a listed use-point temperature of 42.5°C. Keep those figures separate; the first is not a claim about the water temperature in every bath. Guests can add water to cool the private baths.
Room choice needs a quick confirmation. Keyaki is described as having its own natural hot-spring bath, but the Tsubaki page uses the same “only room with a natural bath” wording while also describing one in that room. Other room listings say they do not have an in-room onsen. Ask Yumesaki which room categories currently include the bath before paying for that feature; all guests can use the three shared private baths.
Meals are central to Yumesaki’s offering. The inn serves seasonal kappo cooking, with dinner and breakfast available in the room or dining area by arrangement. It can discuss allergies and ingredient requests in advance. If you plan to spend the evening eating elsewhere, that part of the rate may not add much value.
Yumesaki is about five minutes by car from JR Beppu Station and has no shuttle. The property has four parking spaces. From Beppu Kitahama, the airport limousine bus stop, a taxi takes about ten minutes; include that transfer if you are not driving.
Choose based on how you will use the baths
Pick Showaen if you want a natural bath waiting in your room, particularly if you will stay on the property for most of the afternoon and evening. Choose the room category carefully if an open-air bath is essential.
Yumesaki makes more sense when dinner and a small-inn atmosphere matter as much as the water. Its private baths are natural and do not require fixed reservations, but most rooms do not have an onsen of their own. If that is non-negotiable, look specifically for Keyaki.
Compare the room category and meal plan for the same dates. Showaen’s shuttle runs on set times; check the pickup window with the inn. Neither property publishes a general tattoo rule, so ask about bath access before booking if you have a tattoo.
