Dogo Onsen Honkan or Kisuke no Yu? Pick by Time, Not Ticket Price

Choose between Dogo Onsen Honkan and Kisuke no Yu by travel time, ticket price, bathing facilities, sauna, towels and tattoo rules.

If the Dogo district itself is part of your Matsuyama trip, go to Dogo Onsen Honkan. If you have about 90 minutes between trains and want a sauna or several kinds of bath, Kisuke no Yu is the easier stop: it is roughly a minute from JR Matsuyama Station, while Honkan takes about 25 minutes by tram, plus a short walk.

CostDogo Onsen HonkanKisuke no Yu
Adult admission¥700 for 60 minutes¥850 weekdays; ¥950 weekends/holidays
Tram from central Matsuyama¥250 each way in cash; ¥230 contactless—

For a bath-only stop, include the tram fare and roughly 25-minute ride to Dogo, plus the walk. Kisuke is about a minute from JR Matsuyama Station. If Dogo’s historic district is already on your itinerary, the tram is part of the outing rather than an extra trip just for bathing.

Honkan is a historic bath in a historic neighbourhood

Dogo Onsen Honkan is a working public bath and a nationally designated Important Cultural Property. Its conservation work was completed in December 2024. The basic Kamino-yu bath is the simplest way to visit; higher-priced options add rest areas, a second bath, access to the Yushinden or a private rest room. They are separate packages, so check what your ticket includes before joining the queue.

Honkan opens from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., with last admission at 10:30 p.m. The basic bath ticket does not include towels. Bath towels and face towels can be rented separately, and body wash and hair dryers are provided. There is no sauna, cold plunge or open-air bath in the basic experience. The attraction is the building and its place in Dogo, not a large menu of bathing equipment.

From JR Matsuyama Station, the tram ride is about 25 minutes. Dogo Onsen Station is then roughly a three-minute walk from Honkan. If you have a couple of hours and want the bathhouse, shopping street and nearby landmarks in one outing, that transfer is part of the visit rather than wasted time.

Kisuke saves the transit time and adds sauna facilities

Kisuke no Yu is inside the Kisuke Box complex by JR Matsuyama Station.

Kisuke draws water from two hot-spring sources, used differently across its baths. Its listed facilities include a source-fed bath, sauna, cold bath, carbonated bath and outdoor-air rest area. The June 2026 renovation added to its sauna and relaxation spaces. If you want to bathe, cool down and spend time in a sauna without leaving the station area, Kisuke is built for that kind of stop.

The two sources are not interchangeable: No. 1 is a 30.5°C sodium-chloride spring containing weak radon and is used in selected tubs, including the ceramic-pot bath and carbonated-bath area. No. 2 is a 46°C alkaline simple spring with pH 9.4; the Tsubaki bath is identified as free-flowing. The source information does not make every pool a free-flowing bath, and carbonated or seasonal baths should not be labelled as the same spring.

There is a tattoo exception, but it is limited: guests can buy the facility’s designated cover seal for ¥200 each, up to two, and the tattoo must be fully covered. Ask staff if the size or placement makes coverage uncertain.

Three timing examples

  • Around 90 minutes before your train: Kisuke is the practical choice. Going to Dogo and back would use much of the window before you account for waiting, changing or bathing.
  • Two hours and your first visit to Matsuyama: Honkan can work, but leave slack for the tram and any queue. The operator may manage busy periods with numbered tickets.
  • Half a day in Dogo: Visit Honkan while exploring the district. There is little reason to remove it from the plan just because Kisuke is closer to the station.

Both facilities use natural hot-spring water, but in different ways. Dogo supplies water from its shared spring system to Honkan without adding heat or water, according to the city’s description. Kisuke operates two sources with different bath uses. “Natural onsen” alone does not tell you how the baths or rest of the visit will feel.

Honkan’s basic ticket covers only the downstairs Kami-no-yu bath for 60 minutes; higher-priced rooms and the Yushinden visit are separate options, and towels are not included. Kisuke’s standard entry covers its bath and sauna facilities; the bedrock-bath area costs extra. Neither admission includes a hotel room or meals.

Honkan’s basic plan has no sauna, cold plunge or open-air bath. Kisuke is the better fit if those facilities matter more than the historic building.

For a quick stop with luggage, Kisuke keeps you beside JR Matsuyama Station and has a station-area complex for food and shopping. Honkan is more rewarding when you have time for the tram, the arcade and the surrounding Dogo district. Its busy periods may use numbered tickets, so leave slack rather than treating a two-hour window as two full hours in the water.

Neither is a hotel. Choose a Dogo ryokan if you need a room or a meal plan, then treat Honkan as an outing from your stay. If you are staying in Dogo and want to compare its public baths, see the Dogo day-use onsen guide.

The comparison’s editorial scorecard puts Honkan ahead for atmosphere (100 vs 65), while Kisuke leads on bath variety (100 vs 75). Bathing comfort is scored 80 for Honkan and 90 for Kisuke; cleanliness 80 and 90; quiet 55 and 50; access 100 for both; overall value 95 for both. Treat these as a quick summary of the two different experiences, not user-review averages.
