Getting to Dogo Onsen Without a Car

Reach Dogo Onsen by direct airport bus or city tram. JR Matsuyama and Matsuyama City stations are separate hubs, and the ferry route takes two transfers.

You can reach Dogo Onsen without renting a car. The part that catches visitors out is that JR Matsuyama Station and Matsuyama City Station are different places, served by different railways. Once you know which one your route uses, the onward trip is straightforward.

Starting pointRoute to Dogo OnsenWhat to keep in mind
Matsuyama AirportAirport limousine bus to Dogo Onsen StationDirect and useful with luggage; departures follow flight schedules and change by date
JR Matsuyama StationCity tram, direct to Dogo Onsen Station, about 25 minutesThe tram stop is outside the JR station
Matsuyama City StationCity tram, direct to Dogo Onsen Station, about 20 minutesA separate Iyotetsu hub, not the JR station
Matsuyama Tourist PortPort shuttle to Takahama Station, suburban train to Matsuyama City Station, then city tramMore transfers, but a clear rail route into Dogo

The adult city-tram fare is ¥250 in cash or ¥230 with eligible cashless payment. Fares and timetables can change, so check Iyotetsu’s current route information close to your trip.

From Matsuyama Airport: direct bus, fewer luggage handoffs

The airport limousine bus stops at Dogo Onsen Station. The current adult fare is ¥1,200 in cash or ¥1,180 with eligible cashless payment. The route also serves JR Matsuyama Station, Matsuyama City Station and Okaido, so you can get off nearer your hotel instead of riding all the way to Dogo.

This is usually the least fiddly option when you are carrying a large suitcase and staying in the onsen district. Do not assume the bus runs at a fixed interval: its timetable follows flights and is published for specific periods. Check the matching schedule on the travel date, especially for the return journey.

From JR Matsuyama Station: take the tram outside the station

After arriving by JR from elsewhere in Shikoku, walk to the JR Matsuyama Station-front tram stop and board the service for Dogo Onsen. The ride takes about 25 minutes and does not require a transfer. With a backpack or small case, it is simple. Several bulky bags can make boarding and finding space less comfortable, so leave them at your hotel or use a taxi if that trade-off matters more than the fare.

From Matsuyama City Station: a separate direct tram

Matsuyama City Station is Iyotetsu’s main rail and tram hub. Its city tram reaches Dogo in about 20 minutes. If you have come from Matsuyama Tourist Port, the recommended public-transport route starts with a short shuttle from the port to Takahama Station, then the suburban train to Matsuyama City Station, followed by the tram to Dogo. Allow for transfer and waiting time rather than adding the ride durations alone.

Okaido is a useful stop if Matsuyama Castle, the shopping district or dinner downtown is already on your plan. With luggage bound for a Dogo hotel, it is generally easier to drop the bags first and return to the centre hands-free.

Do not plan an essential connection around the Botchan Train

The Botchan Train is a sightseeing service, not a dependable substitute for the regular tram. It normally runs on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, has limited departures and a capacity of 36, and does not take ordinary advance reservations. Weather or inspection work can also interrupt service. If you have a flight or train to catch, use the standard tram or a scheduled limousine bus.

When a day pass pays off

The digital city-tram and limousine-bus day pass is ¥2,300 for adults. It covers city trams and the airport and port limousine buses, but not the Botchan Train. It may suit a day that combines the airport bus with several tram rides; for a single JR-to-Dogo trip or one return journey, individual fares are usually cheaper.

There is also a digital ¥2,000 adult pass for city trams and Iyotetsu suburban trains. That is the more relevant option if your route includes the Takahama line. Compare the rides you will actually take before purchasing either ticket.

Dogo itself is compact: Honkan, Asuka-no-yu, Tsubaki-no-yu and the covered arcade are walkable from the station. For bathhouse details, see the Dogo day-bath guide. If you are still deciding whether to stay in Dogo or downtown, the stay-area guide covers that choice.
