Hakata-yu and Gozen-yu are both in the central Futsukaichi hot-spring district, so they work well on foot as a short stop. Tenpai-no-Sato is a separate destination on the hillside. Going there makes sense when you plan to stay for the facilities or a meal, not when you only have time to squeeze in one bath between trains.

Hakata-yu keeps the visit simple

Hakata-yu is the clearest choice if the spring itself matters more than extras. It is a traditional three-storey wooden bathhouse; the baths are downstairs and there is a rest room on the second floor. The spring is listed at 43.8°C and described as 100% free-flowing, with no dilution. That is the source temperature, not a promise that the bathing pool stays at 43.8°C. Our guide to reading Japanese onsen temperatures explains the difference.

Hakata-yu is open 10:00 a.m.–9:30 p.m.; last admission is 9:00 p.m. The tourism association lists no regular closing day. Same-day notices can still change the schedule.

There is no open-air bath, sauna or reservable private bath here. That keeps the visit inexpensive and easy to fit around a Dazaifu day, but it is not a place to settle in for an afternoon. Bring a small towel or check what you can buy on site before setting out.

Gozen-yu changes price and hours in October

Gozen-yu's renovation changes its admission and opening time. The city has scheduled a full closure from October 1 through 24, 2026.

Shampoo and hair dryers will be free after reopening. The regular closing day is the third Wednesday; in April and September, the preceding day is also a closure, along with January 1. Check the city notice before travelling near the reopening date.

There is no dedicated car park at the bath. The city points drivers to the municipal Daimon underpass car park, about a five-minute walk away; the first four hours are currently free. If you are walking from the station, Gozen-yu and Hakata-yu are close enough to compare on the same outing, but allow time to dry off and change before continuing.

Tenpai-no-Sato earns its higher admission on a longer stay

Tenpai-no-Sato is open 10:30 a.m.–midnight; last admission is 11:00 p.m. It normally closes on the second Tuesday of each month. The baths include open-air pools, a sauna, jet bath, cooler pool and cold plunge. Soap, shampoo and conditioner are provided. Same-day re-entry is allowed with the hand stamp, provided you stay inside the facility.

The extra cost buys more time and facilities, not an easier route to the central bathhouses. Nishitetsu Futsukaichi is the practical rail station. Bus 22 runs about hourly to Tenpaisaka Daisan.

From the stop, the final 900 metres are uphill and take 15–20 minutes on foot. The facility may arrange a pickup van by phone; a taxi from Nishitetsu Futsukaichi takes about 10 minutes. JR Futsukaichi has no direct bus to the hillside facility.

That makes Tenpai-no-Sato possible without a car, but not a casual add-on. Check the bus for both directions before leaving the station: missing the connection can mean a long wait, and the uphill walk is a poor fit in heavy rain or for anyone trying to limit slopes. If you only want one soak, stay in central Futsukaichi; if you want a sauna, open-air pools and time for food, plan the transfer and give yourself a few hours.

A practical half-day from Dazaifu

After visiting Dazaifu, the two central baths are easier to add than Tenpai-no-Sato. Hakata-yu suits a short stop when its source-fed water is the point of the detour. Gozen-yu works when low admission matters most, provided it is open on your date. Tenpai-no-Sato asks for a separate uphill transfer, so it fits better as the main afternoon plan.

For a date-specific visit, check three things before leaving: Gozen-yu's renovation status if travelling in October 2026; the last-admission time rather than just the closing time; and the return bus or taxi plan for Tenpai-no-Sato. Those checks matter more than trying to visit all three baths in one day.
