Dazaifu to Futsukaichi Onsen: A Half-Day Route That Fits the Clock
Plan a Dazaifu-to-Futsukaichi half-day by train, with time for Hakata-yu or Gozen-yu; Tenpai-no-Sato needs a longer trip and bus check.
Checked: September 27, 2026
Let the time left decide the bath
| Time after Dazaifu | Route | The catch |
|---|---|---|
| About 2–3 hours | Dazaifu → Hakata-yu or Gozen-yu → onward by train | Allow for the walk or local-bus connection between the station and bath |
| About 4–6 hours | Dazaifu → Tenpai-no-Sato → Nishitetsu Futsukaichi | Bus 22 is roughly hourly; the stop is still an uphill 900 m walk from the facility |
| Less than 2 hours | Keep the visit in Dazaifu | A bath can turn a short temple visit into a rushed connection |
Gozen-yu’s October closure and reopening terms are listed below; check the city notice before planning around its return.
The train is quick; the second leg takes planning
From Dazaifu Station, take the Nishitetsu Dazaifu Line to Nishitetsu Futsukaichi. The ride is about 6–7 minutes, and the adult fare is ¥180 under Nishitetsu’s April 2026 fare table. Nishitetsu Futsukaichi is the transfer point for trains toward Fukuoka (Tenjin), so you can leave for the city after bathing without returning to Dazaifu.
From Nishitetsu Futsukaichi, a local bus to the hot-spring district costs about ¥210 one way, though the wait adds to the journey. Hakata-yu and Gozen-yu are also about a ten-minute walk from JR Futsukaichi Station; that is a separate station, not the Nishitetsu interchange.
The central baths are not beside Nishitetsu Futsukaichi Station. The local bus route serving the hot-spring district can save some walking, but departures are spaced out; check the date-specific timetable before deciding to wait. Hakata-yu and Gozen-yu are about a 10-minute walk from JR Futsukaichi Station, which is a different station from Nishitetsu Futsukaichi. A taxi is the simpler fallback if a train connection is tight or you do not want to walk between stations.
Route A: Hakata-yu for a two- to three-hour stop
Hakata-yu is the easiest bath to build around a short visit. It charges ¥350 on weekdays and ¥450 on weekends and public holidays, opens at 10:00 a.m., and stops admitting bathers at 9:00 p.m. The wooden bathhouse has a rest room upstairs, but no open-air bath, sauna or private bath. Plan enough time to wash, soak, change and return to the station; the closing time is not a useful arrival target.
This route suits travelers who want a low-cost bath before returning to Fukuoka. It is a poor fit if a private soak or a long lounge stay is the main reason for leaving Dazaifu.
Route B: Gozen-yu when the municipal bath is open
Through September 30, 2026, Gozen-yu is the least expensive option, at ¥250 for adults and ¥130 for children. Current hours are 9:00 a.m.–9:30 p.m., with last admission at 9:00 p.m. The city lists closures on the third Wednesday of each month and, in April and September, the preceding day as well.
Gozen-yu’s October schedule is:
| Dates | Status and terms |
|---|---|
| October 1–24, 2026 | Closed for renovations |
| From October 25, 2026 | Scheduled to reopen at 10 a.m.; adults ¥450, children ¥230 |
| Rest space | Second floor available until 8 p.m. |
| Included amenities | Shampoo and hair dryers |
Check the city’s notice before setting out in case the reopening plan changes.
Gozen-yu has no dedicated car park. Drivers can use the municipal Daimon underpass car park, about five minutes away on foot; the first four hours are currently free. This is worth knowing if the group includes someone who would rather not add another walk after bathing.
Route C: Tenpai-no-Sato when the bath itself is the afternoon
Tenpai-no-Sato is the choice for open-air baths, sauna and a longer break. Adult admission is ¥1,090, and it is open 10:30 a.m.–midnight, with last admission at 11:00 p.m. Set aside time for the transfer and the facilities; the distance alone makes it a poor substitute for the compact town baths.
From Nishitetsu Futsukaichi, bus 22 toward Hirata runs about once an hour. Get off at Tenpaisaka Daisan, then walk roughly 900 metres uphill; the facility estimates 15–20 minutes on foot. A pickup van may be arranged from the bus stop by calling ahead. A taxi from the station takes about 10 minutes. There is no direct bus from JR Futsukaichi to the facility.
Without a car, Tenpai-no-Sato is possible but schedule-dependent. Check both directions before boarding: if you miss the next bus, the wait can approach an hour, and the final climb is steep. Rain, mobility limits or a tight return connection are good reasons to stay around the central baths instead. For an evening soak, do not assume the facility's late closing time means buses run late too.
Keep a return window, not just a bath slot
The Dazaifu-to-Futsukaichi rail leg is short, but the train home to Tenjin or Hakata still determines when you need to leave. Check the last convenient connection before you go, then work backwards from the bath's last admission. For Tenpai-no-Sato, decide on the return bus or taxi before entering the baths; the station-side fallback is not within an easy walk.
| Cost for two adults | Amount | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Hakata-yu, weekday | About ¥700 | Bath admission |
| Hakata-yu, weekend | About ¥900 | Bath admission |
| Gozen-yu, through September | ¥500 total | Two tickets at ¥250 each |
| Tenpai-no-Sato | ¥2,180 | Two standard admissions |
| Taxi from Nishitetsu Futsukaichi to Tenpai-no-Sato | About ¥2,600 | Round trip |
| Dazaifu–Futsukaichi rail fare | ¥720 | Round trip; local bus is extra |
If Gozen-yu is closed, a quick visit still works at Hakata-yu. If the Tenpai bus timing does not fit, switch to the central hot-spring district rather than spending the afternoon waiting for the next hillside connection. Bath-specific prices, rules and facilities are listed in the Futsukaichi guide.
