Minakami Day-Use Onsen: Takaragawa, Yushinkan or Mitsumine no Yu?
Choose Takaragawa for a destination outdoor soak, Yushinkan for several hours, or Mitsumine no Yu for a low-cost visit. None is near a Shinkansen station.
Minakami is a large mountain area, not one cluster of baths around a single station. These three day-use options are far enough apart that the best one depends on where you are going and how much time you want to spend in the bath.
For a first visit centred on an outdoor soak, choose Takaragawa Onsen’s day-use building, Takaragawa Sanso. Yushinkan works better if you want several bathing options, a place to eat and room to rest. Mitsumine no Yu is a modest municipal bath for drivers who care more about the spring than extra facilities.
| Bath | Current adult admission | Posted hours | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Takaragawa Sanso | ¥1,500, bath dress included | 10:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m.; last entry 4 p.m. | Large riverside outdoor baths |
| Okudaira Onsen Yushinkan | ¥700 for 3 hours | 10 a.m.–8 p.m. | Longer stay, rest space and meal options |
| Tsukiyono Onsen Mitsumine no Yu | ¥600 for visitors from outside Minakami | 10 a.m.–7:30 p.m. | A short, low-cost soak with simple facilities |
Takaragawa is worth the trip when the baths are the main event
The day-use entrance is Takaragawa Sanso, separate from the inn’s overnight check-in. Its four large outdoor baths sit along the river, with a combined area the operator describes as about 470 tatami mats. Day visitors can also use the indoor bath at Sanso. Adult admission is ¥1,500, and the facility’s own bath dress is included; outside bathwear is not accepted. Rental bath towels cost ¥100 and face towels are ¥200 to buy.
Reception is listed from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with last entry at 4 p.m. The operator recommends arriving by around 3 p.m.; visitors may use the baths for up to four hours. Outdoor movement between pools is part of the visit, which can feel quite different in winter. Check road conditions and be prepared for snow and ice if driving in the colder months.
There is a useful transport detail to verify before you set off. Takaragawa’s day-use page says it does not provide pickup for day visitors, while Gunma’s official access guide describes a transfer from Takaragawa Iriguchi for both day visitors and overnight guests. Take the route bus to the entrance only after confirming how the final leg is operating that day; do not assume a hotel shuttle is included with a day ticket.
Yushinkan has more room for an unhurried visit
Yushinkan suits a half-day visit. It normally closes on Thursdays, with holiday and seasonal exceptions listed by the operator.
| Adult ticket | Price | Validity |
|---|---|---|
| Short visit | ¥700 | 3 hours |
| Extended visit | ¥1,020 | 5 hours |
| Day ticket | ¥1,450 | 10 a.m.–8 p.m. opening window |
The bathing area includes indoor and garden-side outdoor baths, massage baths, a seasonal bath and a low-temperature sauna. Its spring information distinguishes the main heated, circulated baths from a roughly 30°C source-fed tub that is not heated or circulated. That cooler tub is closer to a cool spring soak than a conventional hot pool.
Basic washing supplies are provided. Towel rental costs ¥210 for a small towel, ¥260 for a bath towel or ¥360 for a set; the standard locker deposit is returned after use. A large communal rest room and dining area make the longer tickets more useful than they might look on price alone. The last leg is less convenient without a car: the facility suggests taking a bus to Takumi-no-Sato and then a taxi for about seven minutes.
Mitsumine no Yu keeps the extras to a minimum
Mitsumine no Yu opens 10 a.m.–7:30 p.m. and closes on the third Wednesday of each month and January 1. All tubs use source-fed spring water.
| Non-resident ticket, rates effective July 1, 2026 | Price | Validity |
|---|---|---|
| Adult | ¥600 | 2 hours |
| Child, age 3–11 | ¥300 | 2 hours |
The bathing area is deliberately basic. Because of the available spring flow, each gender-separated side has only two showers and three taps. Bring your own towels and washing kit, and allow for a wait if the changing area is busy. Its price looks especially good if you are already nearby by car; a separate taxi ride can erase the saving.
One past closure is worth understanding, but not overstating. Mitsumine no Yu closed in 2025 after a voluntary inspection found Legionella bacteria above the applicable standard. The tourism association’s reopening notice said chlorine-based disinfection would be used as part of hygiene management after it reopened. “Source-fed” describes how water reaches the baths; it is not proof that no disinfectant is used.
Which one fits your route?
Choose Takaragawa if you can give the riverside baths most of the afternoon and have confirmed the transport. Pick Yushinkan when you want to bathe, eat and rest in one place, or when you are combining it with Takumi-no-Sato. Mitsumine no Yu is a good short stop for drivers who want a low admission price and do not need elaborate amenities.
If you are going by train, compare the bus connections both ways before choosing a facility. Minakami’s local sights are spread across the mountains, and a cheap entry fee does not help if the return connection leaves you waiting for hours. For a bath close to the railway at Doai, see the Yufuki-no-Yu guide; its day-use timetable varies, so call the lodge first.
