Ikaho in Winter: Check the Ground Before You Climb

A winter date does not guarantee snow on the ground: Shibukawa City’s 4 March 2026 update reported no snow on the main roads around Ikaho that day. The same notice warns that sudden snowfall and low temperatures can freeze roads. It advises drivers to use winter tires or carry chains, and provides separate live views of nearby roads and the stone-step street. A clear road does not tell you whether the steps are slippery.

Before leaving, check the city’s road-snow page and Ishidangai live camera. Then decide how much of the 365-step street to walk. If the lower steps are slick, a shorter visit and an indoor soak are a better plan than trying to finish the climb.

Driving and buses have different winter trade-offs

Driving gives you more control over luggage and stops outside the hot-spring district, but you are responsible for the mountain approach, parking and winter equipment. Shibukawa City’s standing advice is to fit studless winter tires or carry chains when visiting during the winter-risk period. That advice does not mean chains are needed every day; it does mean a forecast with no active snowfall is not proof that the road will stay clear of ice. Check the live road cameras and current weather before setting out, and do not take a rental car into the hills unless you have confirmed its tires and know how to use any supplied equipment.

Kan-Etsu buses connect Shibukawa Station with Ikaho in about 25 minutes under normal conditions. Snow or road disruption can delay service, so check the operator’s notices and leave time for the return trip.

Treat the stone steps as a surface, not a checklist

The 365 steps are the centre of the town, but in winter the descent may be harder than the climb. Shaded sections can hold frost or packed snow after the sun reaches other parts of the street. Use shoes with a grippy sole, keep your hands free when the surface is questionable, and turn back when the next section looks unsafe. A walking pole can help some people, but it does not make ice safe.

Dress for standing outside as well as walking: a warm layer under a wind- and water-resistant outer shell, gloves, a hat and socks that stay warm if damp. Bring a spare pair of socks if snow or slush is expected. Avoid smooth-soled dress shoes. If you use removable traction aids, check the manufacturer’s instructions and take them off where they could damage indoor floors or become slippery on smooth tile.

The city camera is especially useful after snowfall or a freeze-thaw day. It shows conditions at one point on the stone street, not every lane, bus stop or inn approach, so also ask your accommodation about its last stretch from the recommended stop. Keep the day’s plan loose around maintenance and daylight

Shibukawa City lists these full-day inspection closures for 2026–27:

• 26–31 January 2027
• 1–18 February 2027
• 10 March 2027

The city may change the dates. Check its latest notice; weather and same-day operating updates are separate from scheduled inspections.

If the ropeway is running and visibility is good, it can still be a pleasant short ride above the town. If clouds hide the view, the upper station’s outlook may not justify a winter walk, even if the line is open. Keep it optional and check the day’s conditions rather than assuming winter means either permanent closure or guaranteed snow scenery.

Winter changes the bath timetable too

Ishidan-no-Yu is the more sheltered choice when the steps are cold or icy. It is indoors on the stone-step street, though reaching it still requires walking outside.

Inspection or special closures are also possible; check the city’s monthly notice.

The Ikaho Open-Air Bath sits beside the spring source and has no showers. Its approach is exposed to winter conditions, so choose it only if the route is safe and you are comfortable bathing outdoors in the cold.

If the stone street is icy, keep the outdoor part short, use the indoor bath as the main stop and head back while you still have time for the return bus.
