Hakusan-yu in Kyoto: Rokujo or Takatsuji?
Both Hakusan-yu branches charge the same entry fee, but morning hours and closing days differ. Rokujo has an outdoor bath; Takatsuji doesn’t list one.
Start with the calendar. Rokujo closes on Wednesday and opens at 7 a.m. on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. Takatsuji closes on Saturday and opens at 7 a.m. on Sunday only. On a Wednesday, go to Takatsuji; on Saturday, Rokujo is the only option. On other days, choose by where you are staying and whether an outdoor bath matters.
Both branches follow Kyoto’s current regulated adult public-bath price of ¥550. Their association listings include a sauna, cold bath, medicinal bath and common bathing features. Rokujo’s page also lists an outdoor bath. That is the clearest facilities difference; it does not make Rokujo a scenic hot-spring resort.
For families, Kyoto’s standard rates are ¥200 for children aged 6–11 and ¥100 for children under six. A separate prefectural program makes bathing free for children through elementary-school age until March 31, 2027, when accompanied by an adult aged 18 or over and after completing the bathhouse QR procedure. It is a temporary program, not a permanent change to the regular rates; check that it is still running before relying on it.
| Day | Rokujo | Takatsuji | Easiest call |

The hours above follow the Kyoto Public Bath Association’s current Japanese listings. They do not publish last admission times on these pages, so do not plan to arrive just before closing.
Rokujo: a useful morning stop near Gojo
Hakusan-yu’s Rokujo branch is at 893 Ushitora-cho, Shimogyo Ward. The association lists 15 parking spaces and morning opening on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. Its facilities include a sauna, cold bath and outdoor bath alongside the standard indoor pools.
If you are staying around Gojo or the north side of Kyoto Station, Rokujo may be the more natural choice. The outdoor bath is a bonus when you want an open-air break, not a reason to cross town if Takatsuji is closer.
Takatsuji: better placed for Shijo and Matsubara
The Takatsuji branch is at 665 Funaya-cho, also in Shimogyo Ward. It opens at 7 a.m. on Sundays, closes every Saturday and otherwise runs 3 p.m.–midnight. The association lists 10 parking spaces, a sauna, cold bath and medicinal bath, but no outdoor-bath feature.
For a weekday evening near Shijo, Matsubara or Takatsuji, it can save a detour. Sunday mornings are possible too, but Rokujo has the outdoor option if that is part of your plan.
Bring only what you need
Both association pages list towel rental and sales, and soap and shampoo for sale. Those directory labels do not say that supplies are free or included in the ¥550 admission. If you are arriving without a towel, the Kyoto sento guide for visitors without a bathing kit explains what to check before choosing a branch.
The branch listings do not establish a clear tattoo policy or a legal natural-spring analysis. Ask the specific location if tattoo access is a deciding factor. A sento’s reputation for good water is not, by itself, evidence that it uses a legally classified hot spring.
The guide’s seven-category ratings put Rokujo at 85 for bathing comfort, 90 for variety, 75 for cleanliness, 75 for atmosphere, 55 for quiet, 90 for access and 95 for value. Takatsuji scores 80, 80, 75, 65, 50, 85 and 90 in the same order. These are editorial assessments, not visitor-review averages; they do not overturn the practical choice by closing day or location.
For other baths near the station and southern downtown, see the Kyoto Station sento guide. If an actual hot spring is the priority, use the Kyoto day-use onsen comparison instead.
