Kyoto Tamanoyu Is Closed for Rebuilding: What to Know Before You Go

Tamanoyu stopped bathing operations June 21, 2026, for rebuilding. July 2027 is only an estimated reopening; new hours, prices and facilities are unconfirmed.

Kyoto Tamanoyu is not currently open for bathing. The bathhouse closed on June 21, 2026, for a rebuild. Kyoto City material points to July 2027 as the expected reopening month, but neither a precise opening date nor the new building’s prices, facilities or entry rules have been confirmed here. Do not plan around the old 3 p.m.–midnight schedule or trust a map label that still says “open.”

If you are staying near Oike, Kyoto City Hall or central Nakagyo Ward, use an operating bathhouse instead. The central Kyoto sento guide can help find an alternative by location; the late-night sento guide and sauna guide cover specific needs.

The status in three dates

DateWhat it means
June 20, 2026Last day of the old bathhouse’s operation, as reflected in dated reporting and visitor records.
June 21, 2026Rebuilding closure began; a Kyoto hotel’s local guide also carries this dated closure notice.
July 2027Expected reopening month mentioned in Kyoto City material. It is not an announced day or a booking date.

The distinction matters because old listings have not all been cleared. Tamanoyu’s former website and the bath association still show historical hours and equipment. Those pages describe the previous building, not a currently available bath or a guarantee about the replacement.

What the old listings can—and cannot—tell you

Before the closure, the former bathhouse was a neighborhood sento founded in 1894. Its old listings described weekday hours of 3 p.m.–midnight, Saturday hours of 2 p.m.–1 a.m., a Sunday closing day, several indoor pools, a sauna and a cold bath. The old website also said guests with tattoos could bathe.

Keep these details in the past tense. A rebuild may change the baths, sauna, pricing, services and management rules. The old tattoo policy cannot be assumed to carry over. Likewise, the former ¥550 adult public-bath rate is useful only as historical context; the price at reopening depends on the rules and tariff then in force.

The old facility’s listing does not provide enough evidence to label it a legally classified natural hot spring. Kyoto’s sento often draw on groundwater, but groundwater alone does not establish a hot spring under Japan’s Hot Springs Act. Any spring claim for the new building would need current source and analysis information.

What to check when a real reopening date is announced

Before adding Tamanoyu back to an itinerary, look for a dated reopening notice from the operator, an updated bath-association listing and current prices and facility rules. In particular, confirm the new hours, closing days, sauna access, towel costs, payment options and tattoo policy. The old pages are not a substitute for those details.

The former location remains useful for planning around central Kyoto: it was within walking distance of Kyoto City Hall and Karasuma Oike. But convenient geography does not make the closed site an available bathing stop. Keep an alternative on the itinerary until the operator confirms that the replacement has opened.
