Does Takachiho Have Natural Hot Springs? Where to Bathe After Sightseeing
Takachiho has public baths but no listed natural hot-spring inns; compare Amanoiwato-no-yu, Hotel Takachiho and the Hinokage alternative.
Checked: September 28, 2026 After Takachiho Gorge or Amanoiwato Shrine, the closest useful bath depends on whether your day ends in town or continues toward Nobeoka. The distinction between a public bath, a mineral-stone bath and a natural spring matters here; facility names alone do not tell you what heats the water.
| Stop | What it is | Useful for | Current constraint |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amanoiwato-no-yu | Public bath, not a natural hot spring | Bathing, sauna and a place to rest while staying in Takachiho | Closed September 29, 30 and October 1, 2026 for renovation work |
| Hinokage Onsen Station | Natural alkaline simple hot spring | A bath on the way from Takachiho toward Nobeoka | Opens at noon; the pump-replacement closure ended July 19, 2026 |
| Hotel Takachiho’s Amaterasu bath | Artificial mineral bath, not underground spring water | Hotel guests; day-use access is currently unavailable | The hotel suspended bathing after a September 2026 Legionella test found levels above the limit in the men’s bath; no reopening date is given in its notice |
The old Takachiho-no-yu is closed
The former Takachiho-no-yu closed on March 28, 2021. It was not simply renamed: the town changed the nearby bus stop from “Takachiho Onsen” to “Onsuipūru” (“heated pool”) after the closure. Older itineraries that still direct visitors to Takachiho-no-yu, or label that stop as a hot spring, are out of date. The town’s closure notice and bus-stop renaming notice confirm both changes.
Staying in Takachiho? Use the town bath when it is open
Amanoiwato-no-yu is about a 15-minute drive from central Takachiho. It has two public bath areas named after local kagura stories, plus an electric bath, sauna and a rest space.
For visitors from outside town, admission is ¥500 for adults and ¥300 for elementary-school children.
It opens 10 a.m.–10 p.m., with last entry at 9:30 p.m. Wednesday is the regular closing day, except when a holiday changes the schedule.
There is a near-term exception: the town’s current notice schedules the facility to close on September 29, 30 and October 1, 2026 while scaffolding is installed for renovation. Do not plan around its usual Wednesday schedule for those dates.
The bath is described as a public bathing facility, not a natural onsen. If your priority is a spring-fed bath, this is not the place to compromise that requirement. For a wash, sauna and evening stop before returning to a Takachiho hotel, the location and late closing time are more relevant.
Heading toward Nobeoka? Hinokage is the natural-spring detour
Hinokage Onsen Station is in Hinokage Town, on the way from Takachiho toward Nobeoka. The facility occupies the former Hinokage Station building on the discontinued Takachiho Railway; its old platform is still part of the entrance. The operator lists the water as an alkaline simple hot spring, and the baths include an indoor pool, outdoor bath, super-jet bath and sauna.
Admission is ¥600 for adults. Bathing is listed from noon to 8:30 p.m., with the facility closing at 9 p.m.; Monday is the regular closing day unless it falls on a holiday. Spring-pump work paused bathing in July, but the local tourism association announced reopening from July 19, 2026. If Nobeoka is your next stop, this fits the direction of travel better than returning to Takachiho after bathing.
Don’t count on the hotel bath as a third day-use option
Hotel Takachiho describes its Amaterasu bath as an artificial mineral bath using a light-stone system, not water that rises naturally from underground. A September 25, 2026 notice says a September 15 test found Legionella bacteria above the permitted level in the men’s bath; the hotel stopped bathing and began cleaning and disinfection. The notice gives no reopening date, so older tourism listings showing day-bath hours and a ¥390 price are not a reliable basis for a visit.
If you are not driving, compare the bus times and direction of travel before choosing Hinokage; no rail service connects these stops. When you are staying in Takachiho and only need a late bath, Amanoiwato-no-yu is the simpler option outside its closure dates. The onsen spring-quality guide explains how to distinguish natural spring water from an artificial mineral bath.
