Gozu Onsenkyo Without a Car: Using the Bus from Suibara Station
From Suibara Station, the Gozu bus serves Deyu, Imaita and Murasugi, but departures are sparse. Pick one bath and check the return bus before you go.
Gozu Onsenkyo is made up of three small hot-spring districts east of Niigata City: Deyu, Imaita and Murasugi. They are close enough to look like a simple walking circuit on a map, but the area does not have a frequent shuttle linking each bath. Without a car, the main connection is Agano City’s Gozu Onsenkyo Line, which serves the Suibara Station area and stops at all three districts.
That makes a visit possible, not spontaneous. Start with the bus timetable for your travel date, then work backward from the last bus you are willing to take. A missed departure can cost much of the day, so a half-day trip is best spent at one bath. Two can work if the times line up; trying to fit in all three is a risky default.
How the route works
For JR travellers, Suibara Station on the Uetsu Line is the practical rail gateway. From there, the municipal bus runs through the area, with stops for Deyu Onsen, Imaita Onsen and Murasugi Onsen. Agano City publishes route maps, timetables and operating-day notes on its bus page. The available departures are sparse compared with an urban route, and some runs have different weekday, weekend or school-day conditions.
The city says the Gozu Onsenkyo Line has services on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays as well as weekdays, while certain holiday periods have service suspensions. That does not mean every weekday departure also runs on weekends. Open the timetable and check the run number, date type and direction for both the outbound and return journeys. Weather and road conditions can also cause delays or cancellations.
Which bath is easiest to fit in?
For a short visit, choose one facility and give yourself time to get back to Suibara. Kehoji no Yu in Deyu opened in a new building in April 2026. It is open 8 am–6 pm, with last entry at 5:30 pm. Its washing stations make it more accessible for first-time visitors than the former communal bath.
In Murasugi, Yakushi no Yu is the low-cost communal-bath option. Its operating details have changed, and older pages still show superseded prices and schedules; confirm the latest notice before making it your only stop. Imaita’s Yumotokan is a ryokan with a day-use bath, but it operates within set windows and can pause day visits on particular dates. If you are going specifically for the inn, check the day-use status by phone.
For a useful comparison of the three areas and their bath styles, see the Gozu Onsenkyo day-bath comparison.
Plan the return before the soak
Use the timetable to decide how much time you have at the bath, rather than choosing a bath first and hoping a bus will appear when you are ready. Check the stop name carefully: the route uses named stops such as Deyu Onsen (Rotary), Imaita Onsen and Murasugi Onsen. Leave time to walk from the stop, change, bathe and be back at the roadside before departure.
If two districts fit without rushing, take the facility with the narrow day-use window first and leave the communal bath for later. Do not lock in that order until you have checked the actual bus direction and departure times; the timetable may make the reverse route more practical. Keep a taxi as a fallback only if you have confirmed one is available, rather than assuming a car will be waiting at a rural stop.
Dates that need an extra check
Agano City lists Obon and the New Year period among the municipal bus service holidays. Winter road conditions can also affect travel. Before leaving, check the bus timetable, the JR Uetsu Line, and same-day notices from the bath you plan to visit. A schedule printed on an older travel page is not a substitute for the city’s current timetable.
