Private Onsen Near Kansai Airport: Garden Palace or Matsuba Onsen Takiyu?

Garden Palace offers 60-minute private baths from ¥3,900 for two; Matsuba has a ¥720 public bath and six rooms with private natural-radon baths.

These two southern Osaka onsen are easy to lump together because both offer natural spring water and private bathing. Their day-use options are quite different. Kansai Airport Spa Hotel Garden Palace is the convenient choice for a timed private soak near the airport. Matsuba Onsen Takiyu is farther inland in Kaizuka: you can use its public bath for ¥720, or stay overnight in one of six rooms, each with a private natural radon open-air bath overlooking the Kogi River.

The first comparison is about what the price buys, not which spring is “better.” Garden Palace rents you a private room for a fixed slot; at Matsuba, the private bath comes with an overnight guest room. Matsuba’s ¥720 ticket buys access to its public bath and semi-open-air pool, not to one of those six private room baths.

Garden Palace now offers bath-only bookings

An official notice dated August 7, 2026 says that guests may book a private bath without booking a stay or day-use room. The standard one-hour rooms—including Sakura, Matsu and Tsuki—cost ¥3,900 for two adults on weekdays and weekends alike. A solo visitor still pays the two-person rate. Children up to the third grade of elementary school are free, but the standard booking is for two to three people; confirm the exact room capacity when booking.

The more elaborate rooms have separate pricing. The Annex and Hana/Rin baths include facilities such as a barrel sauna and spring-water cold bath; prices and booking durations vary. Do not assume the ¥3,900 rate includes these upgrades.

There is an outdated conflict worth knowing: the general online booking system still says that a private-bath-only visit is not available. The later, dated notice explicitly permits it and says reservations are by telephone. Call the hotel to book and confirm availability rather than relying on the old online wording.

Choose by bathing style, not just the number of baths

Garden Palace has several bookable formats. Sakura, Matsu and Tsuki are the simpler private semi-open-air rooms; Matsu adds a massage bath. The tatami family bath with sauna has a waterproof tatami bathing area, diaper-changing table, baby-care items, child bath chair and adjustable shower chair. Hana and Rin are the high-priced choice for a private barrel sauna and spring-water cold plunge; Hana takes two to four people, while Rin is limited to two. The main-building public bath has private slots at 10:30 and noon, while the private annex is a separate, more expensive product.

Matsuba’s rooms are all private, but their layouts are not identical. Kikyo, Tsubaki and Ajisai are marked barrier-free. Botan and Yuri place the outdoor bath below the terrace by a flight of stairs, nearer the river. If mobility matters, request a suitable room rather than choosing only for the view.

Matsuba is cheap by day, private by night

Shampoo, body wash and hair dryers are provided. The public bath includes natural radon spring water and a semi-open-air bath; the day ticket does not include a private room bath.

For that, book a stay. All six guest rooms have a private open-air natural radon bath. The hotel states that guests under 12 cannot stay overnight. Its current room information describes the private baths as spring water, while booking details specify recirculating filtration; “natural spring” does not mean untreated, free-flowing water.

Rooms and meal plans set the overnight price, which changes by date. September 2026 booking examples for two guests showed selected plans from about ¥30,200 per person in Fuji and ¥31,900 in Kikyo. These are examples, not fixed rates for every room or season.

The day ticket avoids paying for a room if you only want a soak. If you want a spring bath in your own room at night and again in the morning, compare an overnight stay—not Garden Palace’s one-hour rental.

Matsuba welcomes children for day bathing, charging ¥350 from age three and nothing under three, but will not accommodate children under 12 overnight. Garden Palace’s August booking notice makes children through third grade free in some private-bath plans, with room-specific capacity limits; its tatami family room has useful fittings for young children. Couples seeking one shared private soak may prefer Garden Palace. Adults who want a quieter overnight stay with a private river-facing bath may prefer Matsuba.

Airport access is not the same as a free airport shuttle

Garden Palace is around a 15-minute drive from Kansai International Airport. Its complimentary shuttle connects the hotel with Hineno, Izumisano and Rinku-Town stations, rather than running directly to the airport terminals. Day visitors should confirm whether any particular pickup or drop-off applies to their booking; hotel guest transport is not automatically included with a bath-only reservation.

Matsuba Onsen is in the hills of Kaizuka. By public transport, reach Mizuma-Kannon Station and arrange the final leg by bus or taxi; the hotel’s pickup is subject to arrangements and should be confirmed ahead. It is more natural as a driving stop if you are already exploring southern Osaka.

From central Osaka, Matsuba is about a 40-minute drive; it is around five minutes from Kaizuka IC. A direct taxi from Kansai Airport is estimated at about 25 minutes, but this is not a direct train stop. Rail travellers can go to Kaizuka Station, continue on the Mizuma Railway to Mizuma-Kannon and take a bus or taxi for the last ten minutes. Pickup is not guaranteed for every day visitor: dining-group service has advance-booking and minimum-party conditions, while overnight guests must arrange their ride separately.

Matsuba’s current rules prohibit entry for tattoos, including sticker tattoos. Garden Palace’s published pages do not clearly settle its tattoo policy; ask before booking if that matters. For more detail on Garden Palace itself, see the hotel’s private natural onsen guide.

The facilities publish different levels of spring data. Garden Palace links a July 2018 analysis for Yoshimatsunoyu: source temperature 27.3°C, pH 7.1 on site and 7.2 in the lab, pumping rate 400 litres per minute, and a simple spring classification. This is a 2018 report, not a new 2026 test.

Matsuba identifies its baths as natural radon spring water but publishes no comparable current source measurements. Its room information says the private open-air baths use 100% natural radon spring water with recirculating filtration.

Neither facility’s information supports a claim that every bath is untreated, undiluted and continuously flowing. Garden Palace confirms chlorine disinfection and does not describe every pool’s treatment separately. Matsuba specifies filtration for the guest-room baths, but has not published a complete pool-by-pool process for the public baths. Choose them for natural water and private bathing, not on an unsupported “all baths are source-fed” claim.

For one person travelling alone, Matsuba’s public day bath is usually the more sensible spend: ¥720, or ¥870 with a ¥150 towel. Garden Palace’s cheapest private reservation is ¥3,900 even for one guest, because it charges the two-person minimum. It can still make sense for a solo traveller who specifically values private space and is already in Izumisano, but it is poor value if the goal is simply to bathe.

For a final night before an early flight, Garden Palace is the easier of the two to pair with an airport-area hotel stay: the nearby-station transfer and morning train options can help, though its shuttle never goes to the terminal. Pick Matsuba when the river setting and room bath are the point of staying overnight, or when your southern Osaka drive already takes you past Kaizuka. If all you need is a public bath near Rinku-Town, compare the Kansai Airport and Rinku day-bath options instead.
