Three day baths in Sarugakyo, from a full spa visit to a quick soak

Compare Sarugakyo’s three day-use baths by price, facilities, spring-water supply, tattoo rules and access from Jomo-Kogen.

Sarugakyo has three distinct day-bathing options. Mantenboshi no Yu is the full-service choice, with a lake view, sauna, food and room to stay for several hours. Choseikan gives you an outdoor bath in a wooded valley, but getting there means negotiating about 80 steps. Hashiba is the inexpensive option if the bath itself matters more than a lounge, restaurant or sauna.

FacilityAdult entryBathing windowMain reason to go
Mantenboshi no Yu¥950 for 3 hoursWeekdays 10 a.m.–8 p.m.; weekends/holidays to 9 p.m.Akaya Lake view, sauna, food and rest area
Choseikan¥600 outdoor / ¥1,000 indoor8 a.m.–7 p.m.A forested outdoor bath and spring water
Hashiba¥5008 a.m.–6 p.m.; other hours by arrangementA small bath with a published 27-litre-per-minute flow claim

These are the current prices listed by Minakami’s tourism association and the properties. Hashiba’s page is clearer than one older discount page that still shows ¥550; the association’s current listing is ¥500. Confirm the day’s operating status before setting out, especially at Hashiba, which closes irregularly.

Mantenboshi no Yu: easiest for a group or a longer stay

The ¥950 adult ticket covers three hours. Five-hour admission is listed at ¥1,200 and a day pass at ¥1,800. The two bath areas, Sato no Yu and Tanabata no Yu, rotate by gender each day. Both have indoor and outdoor bathing, a sauna and a warm bath; the outdoor areas have different features. There is also a 110-tatami rest hall, restaurant and reservable private bath.

For most first-time visitors, three hours is enough for bathing, a break and a meal. A longer ticket is useful in bad weather or after an outdoor day, not simply because the facility has many amenities. Mantenboshi closes Tuesdays unless it is a public holiday. Its tattoo policy is explicit: tattoos, tattoo stickers and body paint are not accepted. Having a private bath does not create an exception to the entry rule.

Choseikan: scenery comes with stairs

Choseikan separates its baths and prices. The outdoor bath is ¥600 for adults; the indoor bath is ¥1,000. Minakami’s association describes the outdoor bath as 100% natural spring water flowing continuously, with a source temperature of 56.5°C. That is source temperature, not necessarily the temperature in the bathing pool. The outdoor bath sits below about 80 steps, so choose the indoor bath or another facility if stairs are a concern. Choseikan’s English-language page explicitly says guests with tattoos may bathe.

Hashiba: low entry, fewer extras

Hashiba’s adult ticket is ¥500 and the child ticket is ¥300.

The property says 27 litres of spring water per minute flows directly into its bath and describes the bath as 100% free-flowing. Its public water-analysis sheet is from 2005; the chemistry and treatment notes on that sheet should not be presented as newly measured 2026 conditions. The current flow claim is separate. There is no day-visitor meal service and no sauna.

All three can be reached from the Sarugakyo bus corridor, though the walking distance from the stop differs. If travelling without a car, see the half-day bus plan. If the next stop is Hoshi Onsen, compare the two areas in Sarugakyo or Hoshi?.
