Sawatari Onsen Public Bath: Hours, Price and Bus Access
Sawatari’s public bath costs ¥300 and opens 9 a.m.–8:30 p.m.; the last bus back to Nakanojo leaves at 5:37 p.m.
Sawatari Onsen suits a short soak while travelling around Nakanojo or Shima. The low entry price is appealing, though the limited bus timetable matters more than the bath’s closing time if you are travelling by train. For a wider look at the area, start with this Gunma onsen guide or compare it with the day-use baths in Shima Onsen.
What the public bath is like
The bath is the only shared public bath in Sawatari’s small hot-spring district. Men and women use separate indoor bathing areas, each with a hotter tub and a milder one. The facility description lists indoor bathing only; it does not describe an outdoor bath, sauna, restaurant or lounge.
Bring a small towel and soap. Showers and supplied toiletries are not listed as available. If you need a shower, a long rest after bathing or a larger choice of facilities, a staffed day-use bath elsewhere in Gunma will fit better; the Minakami day-onsen guide covers a few alternatives.
The spring water is calcium-sodium sulfate-chloride and emerges at about 55°C; that is the source temperature, not a tub reading. The bath describes its tubs as hotter and milder but publishes no exact bathing temperatures or details on flow, filtration or disinfection. For more on source and bath temperatures and onsen spring types, see the linked explainers.

Guests staying at an inn in Sawatari Onsen can use the public bath free with the inn’s bathing permit. Ask your lodging where to collect it. No weekly closing day is listed in the published schedule; call ahead if your visit depends on a specific date or you will arrive close to closing.
The bus works, but it does not follow the bath’s hours
From JR Nakanojo Station, the Kan-etsu Kotsu Sawatari Line takes about 20 minutes to the Sawatari Onsen stop; the bath is a short walk from there. A taxi takes about 25 minutes and is a practical fallback when the bus does not fit your schedule. The Shima no-car transport guide explains the wider rail-and-bus connections for the area.
The timetable effective April 1, 2026 lists several departures from Nakanojo Station, including 7:23 a.m., 8:25 a.m., 9:15 a.m., 10:25 a.m., 12:53 p.m., 2:25 p.m., 4:10 p.m. and 5:11 p.m. Some services have weekday or seasonal symbols, so check the column for your travel date rather than assuming every bus runs daily.
For the return, the last listed bus leaves Sawatari Onsen at 5:37 p.m. and reaches Nakanojo Station at 6:01 p.m. The bath stays open almost three hours longer, but that does not help a day visitor who needs the bus. Plan around an earlier return if you want room to change, dry your hair and walk to the stop without rushing. For alternatives, compare the free community baths in Shima or the Shima day-bath guide if you want a staffed facility.
Is it worth adding to a Shima-area trip?
Yes, if you are already travelling through Nakanojo and want one simple local bath. Its two-temperature indoor setup and ¥300 admission give the stop a clear purpose; there is little reason to make it a full-day destination on its own. The road connection is useful for a combined trip, but the limited bus hours make a late bath a poor fit for anyone without a car.
If you want time to explore both districts, the Shima day-trip versus overnight guide helps decide whether to stay nearby. The Shima stay-area guide compares bases for an overnight visit.
