Day-Use Onsen in Sekigane and Iwai: Which Bath Fits Your San-in Trip?

Sekigane and Iwai offer quick local baths, a sauna, traditional inn bathing and a coastal stop. Compare facilities and access before choosing.

Sekigane and Iwai are both small, historic hot-spring areas in Tottori, but they work better as separate stops than as a two-town bath crawl. Sekigane, inland from Kurayoshi, has everything from a ¥200 neighborhood bath to a full day spa. Iwai, east of Tottori City near Iwami and the Uradome Coast, is built around the source-fed Yukamuri public bath and a handful of traditional inns.

If you already know which side of the prefecture you will be on, start with the dedicated Sekigane day-bath guide or the Iwai Onsen guide. This comparison is for choosing between the areas and their different kinds of day-use bathing.

Sekigane has the wider range of bath styles

Sekigane’s four day-use venues cover different budgets and bathing styles. The town bath is the simplest stop; Yumeikan has the broadest facilities, while Hoshitori Terrace pairs a sauna with an outdoor bath. Torikai is an inn bath with less predictable visitor access.

Yumeikan is the more comfortable choice for a longer stop, with repeat bathing and a paid relaxation room. Hoshitori Terrace is the sauna-and-outdoor-bath option; its operator resumed day use after a temporary suspension. Torikai retains an inn-bath feel, but its walk-in availability is harder to plan around.

Iwai keeps the public bath simple and the inn hours narrow

Yukamuri Onsen is the easiest Iwai bath to plan around, with two source-fed public bathing areas. JR Iwami Station connects to the hot-spring area by bus; the water is about 48°C and its flow is adjusted to moderate the temperature.

Iwai bathAdult admissionDay-use hours / access
Yukamuri Onsen public bath¥380 through Sep 30, 2026; ¥480 from Oct 16 a.m.–10 p.m.; bus from JR Iwami Station to Iwai Onsen. Cleaning pauses 10–10:15 a.m. and 3:45–4 p.m.
Iwaiya¥1,000 on the operator page; older association listing says ¥700Usually Fri–Mon, noon–2 p.m.; last entry 1:30 p.m. Maintenance, holidays and cleaning may change access.
AkashiyaNot confirmedUsually weekdays and Sundays, 3–8 p.m.; closed the day before a holiday. Outdoor garden bath closes Nov–Mar.

Iwaiya’s operator price is the current reference; its older association listing has not caught up. Akashiya’s August 1–18, 2026 pause was temporary. Confirm either inn’s day-bathing access before travelling, especially near a holiday.

Choose by the route you are already taking

Sekigane makes sense from Kurayoshi, Misasa or the Hiruzen side. There is no railway station in the hot-spring area, so travellers without a car need to connect from JR Kurayoshi Station by the Sekigane bus line. Timetables are not interchangeable with bath opening hours; check both the outbound and return legs, especially around the October 1, 2026 timetable revision.

Iwai fits a Tottori City, Iwami or Uradome Coast itinerary. The bus from JR Iwami Station drops visitors at the hot-spring area, where the main baths are close together. That makes Iwai easier to manage without a car once you reach Iwami, though it is still a regional transfer rather than a city-center walk.

Sekigane bathing passDetails
Price and validity¥1,500; listed through January 31, 2027
Included bathsOne entry each at Yumeikan, Hoshitori Terrace, Sekinoyu and Torikai
Listed single-entry total¥2,620

The pass saves money only if you plan several baths and their opening windows line up. It does not make a closed bath available or replace calling Torikai.

For a practical choice, keep the areas separate: add Sekigane to a central-Tottori inland day, or save Iwai for the eastern coast. Trying to visit both on one day spends much of the time crossing the prefecture instead of bathing.
