Hamakogetsu: A Lake Biwa View, with a Few Conditions
Check Hamakogetsu's day-use hours, ¥1,500 admission, reservable private bath, Lake Biwa views and the limits on walk-in availability.
Hamakogetsu is a small hot-spring inn beside Lake Biwa in Nagahama. For day visitors, the appeal is a public bath with an outdoor view across the lake and the option to reserve a private bath for a family or couple. Adult day admission is listed at ¥1,500. The private bath adds ¥1,500 per group for a 50-minute session.
The private-room supplement is not the full price: each guest still needs the day-use admission. Two adults therefore pay ¥4,500 in total for admission and one private-bath booking, before any other charges. The private bath is not on the lake side, so book it for privacy rather than expecting the view shown in public-bath photos.
Availability depends on the inn
Day-use bathing is offered in two windows, 11 a.m.–2:30 p.m. and 3–8 p.m. There is a half-hour break between them. Overnight guests have priority for the public bath, and the inn may stop accepting day visitors when occupancy is high. This is not a large spa where walk-in access is guaranteed. Contact the inn on the day you hope to visit and ask which time window is available.
The spring is described as an iron-containing spring, but the available source material does not provide a complete current analysis to support more detailed claims about temperature or pH. The inn's central Nagahama location makes access easier than for many lakeside properties; the local guide describes JR Nagahama Station as a short trip away. Confirm transport and bathing availability directly before travelling.
Families should check the inn's current age and mixed-bathing rules. Tattoos are not accepted in the public bath; do not assume that booking a private bath automatically changes that policy. If the lake view itself is the point of the visit, an overnight stay may make more sense than trying to fit day-use bathing into a limited slot.
