Shiga Onsen without a Car: Choose by the Way Back
Compare seven Shiga day-use hot springs by rail, free shuttle and bus access. The return timetable can matter more than the facility's closing time.
Seven day-use hot springs in Shiga are reachable without driving, but the final leg varies from a station walk to a limited shuttle or a bus-plus-transfer route. Build the visit around the return service, not just the facility's opening hours.
| Bath | Adult day admission | Main route without a car | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Moriyama Yumoto Suisyun | ¥1,050 weekdays; ¥1,150 weekends/holidays | JR Katata or Moriyama Station, then free shuttle | Some marked shuttle trips run only on special dates. Katata has the later return service. |
| Agaryanse | ¥1,650 weekdays; ¥2,050 weekends/holidays | JR Ogoto Onsen Station, then free shuttle | Last listed return is 10:30 p.m., while the bath stays open until midnight. |
| Kusatsu Yumoto Suisyun | ¥1,050 weekdays; ¥1,200 weekends/holidays | Free shuttle from JR Seta or Ishiyama Station | Shuttle hours end well before the 1 a.m. facility closing time; membership card or app may be required. |
| Junibo Onsen Yurara | ¥800 | JR Kosei Station, then six-seat free shuttle | The Kosei service runs on selected days, not Tuesdays or Thursdays. The September 2026 Mikumo trial route was temporary. |
| Happu no Yu | ¥1,300 weekdays; ¥1,700 weekends/holidays | JR Omihachiman Station, then free direct shuttle | A 4 p.m. outbound trip has no listed same-day free return. |
| Kutsuki Onsen Tenkū | ¥850 | JR Adogawa, local bus to Kutsuki Gakkō-mae, then facility shuttle | Shuttle service back to Shin-Honjin ends at 5 p.m., earlier than the bath's 9 p.m. close. |
| Hotaru no Yu | ¥1,050 weekdays; ¥1,150 weekends/holidays | JR Moriyama, then a 15–20 minute walk, local bus or taxi | No free station shuttle is listed. |
Easiest first trip: Moriyama Yumoto Suisyun
From Kyoto, take the JR Kosei Line to Katata and use the free shuttle to Pieri Moriyama. The published schedule has a roughly hourly pattern, with a late return from the complex at 10:40 p.m. Some starred trips are special-service dates only, so use the operator's timetable for your specific day. JR Moriyama Station also has a free shuttle, which is a natural choice if you are already on the Biwako Line. Ordinary Omi Railway buses from either station are a fallback.
Good facilities, less flexible transport
Agaryanse is easy to reach from Ogoto Onsen Station, but the 10:30 p.m. return bus is the practical end of a car-free visit. At Kusatsu Yumoto Suisyun, shuttle access depends on the Seta/Ishiyama timetable and its current membership condition; a public bus to Aeon Mall Kusatsu is another option. Neither facility's late closing time extends the shuttle service.
Yurara is inexpensive, but the six-seat Kosei shuttle runs only on selected weekdays and weekends, and it is not a book-a-seat service. The special Mikumo trips listed for September 2–30, 2026 should not be treated as a permanent route. At Happu no Yu, pair the outbound and return times carefully: the 2 p.m. departure arrives shortly before the listed 3 p.m. return, while the 4 p.m. trip has no same-day return shown.
Kutsuki takes more coordination: ride the JR Kosei Line to Adogawa, take a Kōjaku bus to Kutsuki Gakkō-mae, walk to the roadside station and connect to the onsen shuttle. Although the bath stays open until 9 p.m., the shuttle back to Shin-Honjin is listed only through 5 p.m. An adult round-trip bus-and-entry ticket is available for ¥2,000, compared with ¥2,390 if bought separately; confirm where and when the pass is sold.
Hotaru no Yu is not served by a confirmed free station shuttle. The walk from Moriyama Station takes around 15–20 minutes, which can be more predictable than waiting for a low-frequency connection if you are comfortable with the distance.
These routes and prices are time-sensitive. Check the facility and transit operators' current notices before travel, especially for maintenance closures, holiday timetables and the last return. For spring and facility comparisons, use the Shiga day-use onsen guide.
