The direct bus is the simplest arrival when your flight lines up with it. It drops passengers inside the hot-spring district, at Onsen-shita, Himegami Hiroba and Onsen-kami, so you avoid changing at Matsue Station and then arranging the last leg from JR Tamatsukuri Onsen Station.
The catch is frequency. The direct service is published in date-specific PDFs and is coordinated with selected flights. In the timetable valid September 23–October 9, 2026, the airport-to-Tamatsukuri departure is scheduled for 4:40 pm, reaching the three stops between 5:08 and 5:10 pm. The return service leaves the district at 8:00 am and reaches Izumo Airport at 8:30 am. These are not year-round times; the operator has already posted later date ranges with a different afternoon departure.

If the direct bus does not fit your flight
Use the airport bus to JR Matsue Station, then take the Ichibata Bus Tamatsukuri Line into the onsen district. The airport operator lists the Matsue journey at about 35 minutes and ¥1,300 for an adult. This route involves a transfer, but it is a better use of time than spending several hours at the airport for one direct departure.
Do not add the two drive times together and assume the connection will be immediate. The airport operator says its buses are not timed to connect with JR or other public transport, and seats may be unavailable when a bus is full. Check the onward bus before boarding at the airport. If the wait in Matsue is long, make Matsue the first stop: leave your luggage at a confirmed storage point, eat or visit the city, then continue to Tamatsukuri.
JR is sensible when you are already travelling along the San’in Main Line from Izumo or Yonago. It is not a direct airport route, and JR Tamatsukuri Onsen Station is outside the riverside hot-spring district. From the station, the Shimane tourism site lists about 10 minutes by bus or five minutes by taxi to the onsen area.
Choose the right stop for your ryokan
The airport bus stops in this order: Onsen-shita, Himegami Hiroba, then Onsen-kami. They are all within Tamatsukuri, but the closest stop depends on your accommodation and which side of the Tamayu River it sits on. Ask your ryokan which stop to use; a straight-line map distance can be misleading if you have a suitcase or need to cross a bridge.
The bus operator describes the airport departure time as planned rather than guaranteed. It may wait for the scheduled flight’s baggage delivery, but it does not promise connections to other services. If you have a dinner-included booking, save the ryokan’s phone number and check its latest arrival time before travelling. A delayed flight can turn a direct-bus plan into a Matsue transfer, and the meal cutoff may matter more than the extra bus fare.
Airport departures can be paid with a ticket bought at the airport machine or by the payment methods currently accepted on board. For the return from Tamatsukuri, there is no ticket machine at the stop; the operator lists cash, digital tickets and contactless card payment. A ¥10,000 note is not accepted in the fare box, so carry smaller cash or confirm that your payment method is supported.
