Tamatsukuri Onsen Sauna Guide: Yuyu, Hotel Gyokusen or Matsunoyu?
For day-use sauna in Tamatsukuri, Yuyu has dry and mist rooms, Gyokusen opens its sauna only in the evening, and Matsunoyu has no cold plunge. Check closures.
In Tamatsukuri, “this bath has a sauna” does not tell you whether a day visitor can actually use it. Yuyu closes its sauna during the early-morning bath. Hotel Gyokusen’s daytime visit ends before its sauna opens. Matsunoyu gives outside bathers the broadest sauna window, but it has no cold plunge and its day-use schedule can be interrupted by closures or cleaning.
For a low-cost visit and a choice of dry or mist sauna, start with Yuyu. Go to Hotel Gyokusen at night if you care about its published sauna temperatures and garden-side rest deck. Matsunoyu is the more flexible afternoon option, provided you are happy to cool down without a cold-water bath.

Hours, fares and access below were checked against the operators’ current pages on September 28, 2026. Matsunoyu says some days close for maintenance, cleaning or high occupancy; Hotel Gyokusen also publishes date-specific notices. Check the bathhouse on your travel day rather than treating a regular schedule as a guarantee.
Yuyu: the simplest low-cost sauna visit
Yuyu’s regular session runs from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.; last admission is 9:20 p.m. The operator lists these admission prices:

Both a dry sauna and a mist sauna are available. The current price page lists no separate sauna surcharge.
Bring a bath towel if you plan to use the sauna. Yuyu requires one for sauna users and rents bath towels at reception for ¥150. Body wash and rinse-in shampoo are provided. The operator’s page does not clearly list a dedicated cold plunge, so ask if that is essential to your visit rather than assuming that the deep standing bath is a cold bath.
The 6–8 a.m. early opening is a separate bathing session on Sundays, public holidays and selected holiday periods. Sauna use is explicitly excluded then; normal opening resumes at 10 a.m. Yuyu is usually closed on Mondays, with the closure moving to Tuesday when Monday is a public holiday. Its online calendar is the place to check a specific date.
Yuyu is in the central hot-spring district. Its own access page gives a five-minute drive from JR Tamatsukuri Onsen Station; Shimane’s official tourism site says the Ichibata Bus from the station takes about five minutes to Himegami Hiroba, beside the facility. Hotel Gyokusen: choose the evening ticket for sauna
Hotel Gyokusen lists two dry saunas in its public baths:

Day visitors can use the sauna only during the evening session. The hotel’s current timetable and adult prices are:

The evening ticket includes a soft drink in the lounge. Towels are loaned without charge.
The 80°C and 90°C saunas are in separate baths, and Hotel Gyokusen alternates the bath sections between men and women. Do not plan on trying both settings during one ordinary visit. If one temperature matters to you, ask the hotel which bath will be assigned to you that evening.
The hotel’s public-bath rule generally excludes guests with tattoos, including tattoo stickers. It allows one 10-by-15-centimetre cover sticker if it completely hides the tattoo; stickers are sold at reception. The rule also applies to the sauna, which is inside the bath area.
Station pickup can be arranged by contacting the hotel with your arrival time, ideally at least three days ahead. Same-day pickup after 7 p.m. may not be possible. The access page does not say whether day visitors can use this service, so confirm with the hotel.
Matsunoyu: a longer window, but no cold plunge
Matsunoyu’s day-use bath and sauna schedule differs from the longer sauna hours for overnight guests:

The overnight closing time does not extend the day-use ticket. Outside bathers must leave by the end of the day-use window.
The operator is explicit that there is no cold plunge. If alternating between a hot sauna and cold water is central to your routine, choose another facility or call to ask what is available on the day. For towels, Matsunoyu lists a ¥100 face towel for purchase and ¥200 bath-towel rental.
Day-use opening is irregular. Matsunoyu may close for maintenance, cleaning or other operating reasons; check its notices or call before travelling. Its page links to advance bath tickets but does not say they guarantee entry on a closure or capacity-limited day.

Pick by the part of the sauna session you care about
Yuyu wins on admission cost and gives you two sauna styles, though its early bath is bathing-only and the cold-plunge setup is not clearly documented. Hotel Gyokusen is the one with published sauna temperatures and an outdoor rest deck, but a day ticket only overlaps with its sauna hours in the evening; its rotating bath arrangement means one visit will not cover both saunas. Matsunoyu starts earlier for day visitors and gives you the longest usable window among the three, but there is no cold plunge.
