Yuyu or Matsunoyu: a ¥700 gap between a public bath and a ryokan visit
Compare Yuyu and Matsunoyu by admission, hours, sauna, towels, outdoor baths and access. The cheaper ticket and the more complete visit are not the same thing.
Yuyu is the easy choice if you want a low-cost soak in Tamatsukuri: its adult day ticket is ¥600. Matsunoyu charges ¥1,300 and gives you a ryokan-style bath area, a garden setting and a longer afternoon window. That extra ¥700 does not buy a private onsen; Matsunoyu’s four bookable outdoor baths use heated water, not natural spring water.

When Yuyu is the better visit
At ¥600, Yuyu is hard to beat for a straightforward bath. Body wash and shampoo are provided, and the facility has both dry and mist saunas during regular opening. Bring a bath towel if you plan to use the sauna; reception rents one for ¥150. The separate 6–8 a.m. session on selected Sundays and holidays is bathing-only, without sauna access. Yuyu usually closes on Mondays, moving the closure when Monday is a public holiday; check its calendar for your date.
What the Matsunoyu premium gets you
Matsunoyu is better if you want to spend longer in a hotel bathhouse, use its outdoor bath and sauna, or add a private room for 50 minutes. The public bath accepts day visitors from 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.; last entry is 8:30. Its sauna may stay open later for hotel guests, but that does not extend the day-use ticket. There is no cold plunge.
The private baths are for privacy, not natural spring water. Room guests pay ¥3,300 for the larger Ki or Iwa baths, or ¥2,200 for Touki or Bin; day-use prices and booking formats differ, so confirm the exact plan with the hotel. Matsunoyu can also suspend day bathing for maintenance, cleaning or crowding.
