One night in Tokachigawa: keep the itinerary to one main bath

Plan a two-day Tokachigawa stay with one main bath, dinner, a morning soak and the bus from Obihiro. Includes seasonal and day-use timing notes.

Indoor Moor-water bath in Tokachigawa Onsen

Tokachigawa works better as an overnight stop than as a race between four hotels. The hot-spring area is close to Obihiro, but each hotel has different bathing hours, towels and water treatment. Pick one place to stay and use its baths in the evening and again the next morning. Add another day-use bath only if transport and opening hours leave genuine spare time.

Day one: arrive, settle in, then bathe

Tokachi Bus Route 45 links Obihiro Bus Terminal and Tokachigawa in about 30 minutes. The exact departure matters more than the headline journey time; check the return service too, and confirm whether a stop requires advance reservation. If you arrive around midday, leave time for lunch or a riverside walk before check-in rather than trying to squeeze in several baths.

Daiichi Hotel is an easy choice for a first visit if you want a mix of indoor and outdoor baths, a sauna and towels included. Kangetsuen suits a slower stay focused on river views and the next morning’s bath. Daiheigen is the lower-cost choice if its later weekday opening fits your arrival. A bath’s day-use window is not the same as the hours for overnight guests.

Keep the evening local. Check dinner’s last seating before choosing a late bus, and do not plan an inter-hotel bath circuit that competes with dinner and check-in. One long soak is more useful than arriving at a second bath just before last entry.

Day two: use the morning, then return to Obihiro

If you stay at Kangetsuen, its morning bath and river-facing setting make an early start worthwhile. At another hotel, use the guest bath if it fits the breakfast and checkout schedule. Leave enough time to pack and reach the bus stop; do not stack a final bath, breakfast, checkout and a connection into one tight hour.

From Obihiro, continue with a city meal or another Tokachi stop. If the weather is clear, an outdoor activity can fit before or after the onsen, but reserve timed activities first and treat weather-sensitive stops as optional. In winter, road conditions and cold waits make a longer buffer sensible.

Costs and water are hotel-specific

HotelAdult day-use admissionTowels
Daiichi Hotel¥2,000Included
Kangetsuen¥2,000Included
Daiheigen¥1,000¥200 towel set
Sasai Hotel¥1,300 under normal conditionsSeparate

These prices exclude bus fare, meals and accommodation. Sasai’s September 2–11 boiler outage has ended and service has resumed. Its latest notice says hot-water temperature or supply may still fluctuate after repairs; check the notice before travelling.

Tokachigawa’s Moor-water reputation does not mean every bath is supplied the same way. Daiichi publishes a mixed source temperature of 54.8°C; Kangetsuen describes its indoor circulation and its outdoor flow-through bath separately. Use each hotel’s own information rather than borrowing another property’s figures.

For a shorter visit, use the day-trip itinerary. For seasonal daylight, weather and event planning, see Tokachigawa through the seasons.

A realistic two-adult budget

Two-adult bath costAdmissionWith towels
Daiichi Hotel¥4,000Included
Kangetsuen¥4,000Included
Daiheigen¥2,000¥2,400 with two ¥200 towel sets
Sasai Hotel¥2,600 at the normal rateTowels cost extra

These are day-bath costs only. Bus fares, meals and room rates are extra; a one-night total depends on your date, room and meal plan. Sasai’s September 2–11 boiler outage has ended and service has resumed, though its latest notice says hot-water temperature or supply may still fluctuate after repairs.

These are comparison figures, not a recommendation to visit two facilities. Usually the lodging bath covers the evening and morning. Add a second bath only if its hours fit before dinner or after checkout, and leave time for changing and reaching the bus stop. Spring thaw and winter snow can disrupt the road or add waiting time; on those dates, prioritize the accommodation’s bath and treat outdoor stops as optional.
