A day trip to Tokachigawa works best with one main bath

Plan a car-free day trip from Obihiro to Tokachigawa around Route 45, the bathhouse admission window and the return bus.

Indoor Moor-water bath in Tokachigawa Onsen

You can visit Tokachigawa from Obihiro without a car, but the day is shaped by bus departures and bath opening times. Pick the bath first, then work backwards from the bus home. Trying to visit several hotels can leave little time to soak and makes a missed connection more expensive.

Tokachi Bus Route 45 takes roughly 30 minutes between Obihiro and the Tokachigawa area. One weekday plan is to take a late-morning bus, arrive around midday, have lunch or walk by the river, then use a bath that opens in the afternoon.

Daiheigen opens at 3 p.m. on weekdays and 1 p.m. on weekends and public holidays. Daiichi generally starts at 1 p.m., except Mondays and Thursdays when it starts at 1:30. Kangetsuen has early-morning bathing on some days, but its schedule varies by day of week.

The association’s 2026 list shows Kangetsuen at ¥2,000 with towels included, and Daiheigen at ¥1,000 plus ¥200 for a towel set. Prices and hours can change. Sasai Hotel’s September 2–11 boiler outage has ended; its current notice says service resumed but hot-water temperature or supply may still fluctuate. Check the latest notice before setting out.

Leave room for the return journey

Check the actual outbound and return timetable for your day. Weekday, Saturday and holiday service can differ, and some stops may require an advance reservation. The map’s half-hour travel time does not account for waiting between buses. In winter, add a buffer for snow and avoid a plan that leaves you outside for a long time after bathing.

If you arrive in the morning, make the wait useful with lunch or a local stop instead of trying to enter a bath before its day-use window. If you have only a short afternoon, choose a single facility and leave time to change, dry your hair and walk back to the bus stop.

Daiichi suits a first visit with several bath styles. Choose Kangetsuen to compare its published water-supply details, or Daiheigen for a lower-priced afternoon. Confirm the bus and bath schedule for your date.

The hotels describe their water differently. Daiichi publishes source figures of 54.8°C and 670 litres per minute. Kangetsuen lists circulation, heating and chlorine treatment for its indoor bath, separately from the diluted flow-through outdoor bath. These are hotel-specific details, not shared Tokachigawa figures.

For spring thaw or winter, shorten the outdoor part of the day and keep an indoor lunch stop available. Summer gives you a longer daylight window; in autumn, plan the return before dusk. Families may prefer one hotel with time to rest rather than multiple changing-room stops, and older travellers should include the walk from each stop to the bus platform. An overnight stay makes more sense if the return timetable leaves too little time for a relaxed soak, or if you want to use a morning bath.

If rain, snow or a delayed bus knocks out the outdoor stop, keep lunch and the bath as the anchors and drop the extra sightseeing first. A day visitor should not count on a hotel shuttle as a replacement for Route 45; the association’s free hotel buses are generally for overnight guests, so confirm eligibility directly rather than planning around one.

For an overnight version, see the Tokachigawa one-night itinerary. The full day-use comparison has bath and towel details.
