Tsurunoyu in Funabori: A Natural Black-Spring Open-Air Bath for ¥600

Tsurunoyu near Funabori Station has a free-flowing natural black-spring outdoor bath and a spring-water cold bath. Adult entry is ¥600; sauna costs extra.

The standout detail at Tsurunoyu is unusually specific: Edogawa City identifies its open-air bath as a free-flowing black spring, and says the cold bath also uses the natural spring. That is more useful than simply knowing the facility has “onsen” water. For the standard ¥600 adult admission, it is a straightforward local bathhouse, not a full-service spa with lounges or overnight facilities.

Which pools use the spring?

The city’s current sento map calls the open-air pool a black-spring kakenagashi bath. It separately notes that the cold bath uses the same natural spring water. Those are the two pools to focus on if you are visiting for the source itself; the city does not publish a pool-by-pool treatment breakdown for every other bath.

There is also a sauna, electric bath, and indoor bathing area. The sauna is an extra, and the current city listing does not give its surcharge. Ask at the counter rather than relying on old visitor posts. Tsurunoyu is a conventional sento, so bring a small towel or budget for a rental. Shampoo and body wash are provided.

Tsurunoyu opens from 3:30 p.m. to midnight, but last entry is 11:15 p.m. Bathing ends at 11:45 p.m. Wednesday is the weekly closing day. Arriving near midnight will not get you through the door.

The bathhouse is about a five-minute walk from Funabori Station on the Toei Shinjuku Line. There are three on-site parking spaces, and the address is 2-11-16 Funabori, Edogawa City. Tattoos are not covered in the city listing’s rules; contact the bathhouse before travelling if that determines whether you can visit.

If you are choosing between the two Funabori black-spring sento, the Otomeyu–Tsurunoyu comparison lays out the differences. Otomeyu is closer to a sauna circuit with multiple cooling pools; Tsurunoyu’s clearest draw is the city-confirmed free-flowing outdoor spring bath.
