Kairyouyu in Shibuya: A Modern Sento with a Whale on the Wall
This redesigned bathhouse blends its 1916 history with carbonated and soft-water baths and a sauna. Adult entry is ¥600; Saturday opening is occasional.
The blue whale mural outside Kairyouyu is hard to miss, but the bathhouse behind it is more than a photo stop. The business dates to 1916; architect Kentaro Imai’s 2018 redesign gave it a darker, quieter look, and later work expanded the sauna and refreshed the women’s bathing area. It still works best as a city sento: come in from Shibuya or Ebisu, bathe, and carry on with your evening.

Shampoo and body wash are provided. Bring a 10-yen coin for the dryer or ask staff about change.
There is no need to add the sauna just to make the visit feel complete. Kairyouyu has soft-water baths, a large carbonated bath, a mid-temperature tub and a cold plunge. The water is treated soft water, not a natural hot spring, and the carbonated bath is a treated bath rather than a naturally carbonated source.
Give yourself enough time
Kairyouyu sets a 90-minute limit for a regular bath visit. The sauna course allows up to 120 minutes for men and 150 minutes for women. That makes this a compact stop rather than a place to spend half a day lounging.
The sauna and bathing areas became especially popular after the 2022 expansion, which added room to the sauna and cold bath and created an outdoor-air rest area. A further renovation refreshed the women’s side in 2025. None of that guarantees an empty seat: evenings and special events can get busy, and the facility may announce occasional aufguss sessions on the day rather than at a fixed time.
A Shibuya address, not a station-front bath
Shibuya and Ebisu stations are both about a 12-minute walk away. Choose the route that fits your plans; neither station is right around the corner. Kairyouyu has no car park or bicycle parking, and its lockers should not be treated as luggage storage. If you are carrying a suitcase, leave it at your hotel or station first.
Regular hours are noon to 11:30 p.m. Sunday through Friday, with last entry at 11 p.m. Saturday is normally a closing day, though the bathhouse sometimes opens for a special schedule or women-only event. Check the current notice before heading over. Tattoo rules are not clearly stated on the pages cited here, so anyone with tattoos should ask Kairyouyu directly.
