Miyagiyu in Nishi-Shinagawa: Natural Spring Baths and a Weekly Rooftop Swap
Both floors use natural spring water, but only the third-floor bath has an outdoor rooftop pool. Men’s and women’s bathing floors switch each Thursday.
At Miyagiyu, the first question is not whether to pay extra for the sauna; it is whether your side has the third-floor rooftop bath that week. The first floor has a natural-spring bathing area with a half-body bath and electric bath. The third floor is the open-air option, with a sky-facing outdoor bath and an outdoor-air rest area. The floors switch between men and women every Thursday, so check the current notice if the rooftop is your reason for going.
Plan around the floor assignment
Both floors use natural hot-spring water. The first-floor arrangement includes a half-body bath and electric bath; the third-floor side has the roofless outdoor bath and space to cool off outside. Sauna, cold bath, reclining bath and jet features are also part of the facility, but the floor swap changes the layout available to each gender.
The schedule changes on Thursdays, and the operator posts the current assignment online and at the entrance. An old review can therefore describe the opposite floor from the one you will find on arrival. If the open-air bath is essential and your dates cannot move, check the latest weekly notice before setting out.
Budget for the sauna add-on
| Item | Price |
|---|---|
| Adult admission | ¥600 |
| Sauna | ¥250 |
| Sauna mat | ¥150 |
| Sauna and mat add-on | ¥400 |
| Adult bath, sauna and mat | ¥1,000 |
| Face-towel rental | ¥50 |
| Bath-towel rental | ¥150 |
| Preschool child | One free with each adult |
The spring is confirmed as natural, but historic water-analysis figures are not current specifications. Bathwater temperature also changes with operating conditions; the outdoor tub has been described around 40°C, with seasonal variation. It is more useful to check the present floor arrangement than to rely on old source-water readings.
Getting there
Miyagiyu is about a three-minute walk from Shimo-Shinmei Station on the Tokyu Oimachi Line, or around 15 minutes from Osaki or Oimachi. It opens 3 p.m.–midnight Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday; Saturdays and public holidays from 1 p.m.; Sundays from 11 a.m. Wednesday is the regular closing day.
For a natural-spring bath with a Japanese garden and a different sauna on each side, compare Matsunoyu in Nakanobu. Miyagiyu’s signature is the rooftop floor, when it is assigned to you.
