Is Wakura Onsen Open in 2026? What Visitors Can Use Now

Yes, you can visit Wakura Onsen. That does not mean the whole resort has returned to its pre-earthquake state. The local tourism association’s current notice lists 11 inns accepting ordinary tourists, including provisional operations, and says seawall works are affecting views from some properties. Check the exact bath, meal plan, entrance and view with your inn rather than relying on old booking copy or photographs.

Which inns are accepting ordinary visitors?

The association currently lists 11 properties for ordinary tourist stays. Its notice says the member-inn count changed from 20 to 19 on April 1, 2026; those figures describe membership, not the number of open hotels. The visitor list includes the following:

The same page separately lists facilities taking disaster-recovery workers, municipal support staff or volunteers. That is not the same as accepting ordinary tourists. If a property is absent from the visitor list, or its own booking page is unclear, contact it before making plans. Even an inn listed as open may have provisional facilities or a narrower meal and room selection than before the earthquake.

So-yu is open; its old outdoor footbath is not

The Wakura Onsen association currently describes So-yu as operating normally. Its posted hours are 7 a.m.–9 p.m., with last entry at 8:30 p.m. Adult admission is ¥500. The monthly closure is the 25th; if that date falls on a Saturday or Sunday, closure moves to the following Monday. The association warns that equipment problems can lead to a later closure.

So-yu lists indoor baths, a standing bath, an outdoor bath and sauna. Its own outdoor footbath remains unavailable because of earthquake damage. Yuttari Park’s separate Pokémon footbath reopened on May 12, 2026; it is free and listed as open 7 a.m.–7 p.m., subject to closure when weather warnings are issued for Nanao. Bring a towel.

The waterfront is still a work site in places

The association warns that seawall construction along the coast affects views from some inns. It also lists a weekday viewing area for the port and coastal repair work, normally open 9 a.m.–5 p.m.; hours can change with weather. The association cautions that parts of the route have broken pavement and that steps and the viewing platform may be slippery. Follow on-site instructions and do not enter closed work areas.

This matters most when choosing a room marketed for its bay view. Ask the inn whether construction is visible from the exact room category and whether access or the entrance has changed. The association’s general notice is not a room-by-room guarantee.

Two major 2026 fireworks events are cancelled

The association announced on January 21, 2026 that both the Wakura Onsen Hokukoku Spring Fireworks and the summer three-shaku-dama fireworks are cancelled for the fiscal year. Do not book a night based on older pages that describe these events as annual fixtures.

Other visitor facilities have their own operating notices, too. Check the official page for any place you plan to visit—especially Notojima Aquarium and transport connections—on the date you travel. A current So-yu listing does not establish that every attraction or route has reopened.

Before leaving, verify these details

• The inn appears on the association’s ordinary-visitor list and has availability for your dates.
• Your exact plan includes the meals and baths you expect; some listings have no dinner or only breakfast.
• The property confirms its current entrance, station pickup and any provisional facilities.
• You know whether seawall works affect the room or waterfront route you care about.
• So-yu and any other facility have no same-day closure notice.
• Your rail and bus connections are current; the station is outside the main hot-spring district.

Wakura’s recovery is visible in the details: some stays and visitor facilities are back, while other buildings and the waterfront remain in transition. Planning around the current list makes a visit possible without mistaking partial reopening for full restoration.
