Budget Private Onsen Stays in Yufuin: Four Ways to Avoid Overpaying for a Room

Compare private bathing at Hoteiya, Hananomai, Baien and Tanokura in Yufuin, from shared baths used when vacant to spring baths in every Tanokura room.

Checked: September 27, 2026 “Private onsen” can mean three different things: a room bath that is yours whenever you want, a shared private-use bath you can enter when vacant, or a private outdoor bath attached to a specific room. The lower-cost choice depends on which version you actually need.

InnLower-cost way to bathe privatelyWhat the upgrade buys
HoteiyaA main-building room without a bath plus either of two free 40-minute private-use bathsA bath inside or attached to your own room, available without waiting for a vacant slot
HananomaiA standard Japanese room plus its shared private-use indoor or outdoor bathAn in-room bath, or an open-air bath in one of two annex rooms
Baien Garden ResortA regular room plus the free private-use family bathsA private bath connected to a specified guest room; confirm the exact category
Ryotei TanokuraA standard room, which already has its own hot-spring bathA private outdoor bath; only five of the eleven rooms have one

A free shared bath works if you can be flexible

Hoteiya’s two private-use baths, Hotei no Yu and Yufudake no Yu, are free, last 40 minutes per use and are available when vacant. The indoor Hotei bath is sheltered; Yufudake is outdoors. Both are listed for 3–11 p.m. and 6–9 a.m.

A room without its own bath can work if one shared soak is enough. Choose a room bath if you need a particular time or want to bathe more than once late at night.

Hananomai has eight rooms: four standard rooms in the main building, two main-building rooms with an indoor bath, and two detached Japanese-Western rooms with an outdoor bath. Guests in standard rooms can use the shared private-use indoor and outdoor baths when vacant; the listed bathing window is 3 p.m. to 9:30 a.m.

The standard rooms are upstairs and require stairs. A lower room rate may not be the right trade if someone in your party has difficulty with steps or luggage.

Baien’s regular rooms can be paired with its free private-use family baths, which are not reserved in advance and are used when available. Its large public outdoor bath is a separate draw. The property’s paths include stairs, slopes and level changes; check the route if mobility matters. Baien had announced a hot-spring well re-drilling project scheduled through November 30, 2026, with daytime work that could bring machinery noise. Confirm the status if your stay falls within or near that period.

Tanokura has the simplest room-bath rule

All eleven rooms at Ryotei Tanokura have an in-room hot-spring bath; five also have a dedicated outdoor bath. A standard room provides private spring bathing, while the upgrade adds an outdoor setting.

The two public baths, Kinrin no Yu and Genryu no Yu, also use free-flowing spring water and each has an outdoor pool. The sides switch at 5 a.m.; the baths are listed as open until midnight and again from 6 to 10 a.m.

Compare equivalent stays, not the first price on screen

Keep the same date, party size, meal plan and cancellation terms when comparing. A no-bath room plus a shared-use bath is not the same product as an in-room open-air bath. Also check whether the room name specifies indoor or outdoor bathing, and whether a shared bath is first-come rather than reserved. Room inventory and prices move by date, so there is no meaningful fixed “cheapest” inn.

For a broader look at two-person privacy and room categories, see the Yufuin couples’ ryokan guide. If an anytime room bath is the priority, compare Yufuin’s 24-hour in-room onsen rooms.
