Sanso Tanaka in Yufuin: Three Private-Use Hot-Spring Baths, No In-Room Onsen
Sanso Tanaka has three spring-fed baths for private use, but no in-room onsen or dinner service. Guests under 16 are not accepted.

Sanso Tanaka has no in-room onsen and no large communal bath, but its three spring-fed baths are used privately by one party at a time. Couples, friends travelling together and solo guests can bathe without sharing the pool with strangers.
That setup comes with a firm age restriction. The inn does not accept guests under 16, so it is not an option for families with children or younger teenagers. It is also a bed-and-breakfast-style stay rather than a full-service dinner ryokan: current plans are room-only or include a boxed breakfast, while dinner service is suspended.
What “private bath” means here
The bathhouse has two indoor rock baths and one outdoor bath. All three are private-use, as are the two shower rooms. You still walk out of your room to bathe, and access is limited to the posted hours: 3–11 p.m. and 6–9:30 a.m. A late arrival leaves less time for a first-night soak; checkout time does not extend the morning bath window.
The inn describes its spring as a sodium bicarbonate and chloride spring and identifies the baths as free-flowing from the source. It does not publish a full treatment breakdown for each tub, including whether any water is added, heated or disinfected. If those details matter to you, ask the property about the current bath operation before booking.
Room choice is about space and the view
There are six rooms across five categories: Deluxe, Superior, Standard, Economy and Single. Standard rooms already have a Mount Yufu view, so compare their dates and rates before paying more for Deluxe. Economy rooms look toward the surrounding hills rather than Mount Yufu; the Single is the smallest option and faces the street. None of these categories adds an in-room hot-spring bath.
Check the exact room listing for its toilet and washbasin setup. Booking sites do not always describe shared bathing facilities in the same way, and a private toilet should not be mistaken for a private bath.
Breakfast is offered as a boxed meal, collected at the front desk between 7:30 and 9 a.m. Room-only plans are also available. If you want a kaiseki dinner at the inn, choose another property; otherwise, the flexible evening leaves you free to eat in town.
