Amagase Onsen: Which Day-Use Bath Should You Choose?
Compare day-use baths in Amagase, Oita: Seitenkaku, Sanso Tensui and Bara no Yu, with prices, hours, private-bath terms and station access.
Coming by train? Seitenkaku is about five minutes on foot from JR Amagase Station. Sanso Tensui makes more sense if you want its waterfall-side setting and can arrange the ride there and back; day visitors choose among five private baths on arrival. Bara no Yu costs ¥400 and stays open later than the other two.

Seitenkaku and Bara no Yu are easier to fit into a short rail stop. Sanso Tensui is farther from the station, and its day-use window ends early. If you’re travelling with someone who needs a private bath, rule out Seitenkaku: both of its baths are public and gender-separated.
Seitenkaku is the easiest station-side soak
Seitenkaku is about a five-minute walk from JR Amagase Station, making it the easiest bath to fit between trains.

There is no private bath. Its two bathing areas, Iyuyu-yu and Yama no Oto, are public and alternate between men and women at set times. The outdoor bath is part of the Iyuyu-yu area, so check the day’s schedule if that is the one you want.
Seitenkaku describes its water as a simple sulfur spring that is not circulated or filtered. Its reported 62.7°C is a historical source temperature, not a bath reading. Tub-by-tub details for added water, heating and disinfection are unconfirmed.
Sanso Tensui: a waterfall setting, with a 2 p.m. cutoff
The public outdoor bath, Takimi-an, closes to day visitors before mid-afternoon. Towels cost extra, so bring your own if you can.

Five semi-outdoor private baths face the stream: Kawa-yu, Yama-yu, Hinoki-yu, Kiri-yu and Kama-yu. A 45-minute session costs ¥2,500. You cannot reserve one in advance for a day visit; choose from what is available when you arrive. If sharing a bath is the main reason for your visit, arrive early rather than assuming you can turn up just before the 2pm cutoff and get your first choice.
The public outdoor bath faces Sakura Falls, reached by climbing 47 steps. That may rule it out for anyone who has trouble with stairs. A private bath could be a better fit, but ask the inn about the route to the specific bath before booking.
The inn classifies the spring as a simple hot spring. It describes Take-sansui as source-fed while also noting that water is added, so “source-fed” should not be read as “undiluted.” A notice listed maintenance for the overnight guests’ men-only outdoor bath from 4 to 18 September 2026; that was not the day-use Takimi-an bath or the private baths. Check for a newer notice if one particular bath matters to your visit.
Bara no Yu is inexpensive, with one detail worth confirming
Bara no Yu is open from noon to 9pm and closes on the first and third Tuesday of each month. Admission is ¥400 for adults. The public bath is a semi-outdoor or outdoor rock bath, and Oita Prefecture lists the spring as alkaline simple hot-spring water at 82°C, with a reported flow of 150 litres per minute.
Private family baths cost ¥2,500, but available listings disagree on whether two or three rooms are in service. Call ahead to ask how many are open that day, which room is available and how long you can use it. The spring-source temperature is not the same as the pool temperature; no current pool-temperature figure is published.
From Amagase Station, the local tourism association describes the walk as about 1.1 kilometres, or roughly 13 minutes. In bad weather or with luggage, that short walk may feel less convenient than it looks on a map.
Will the Amagase Onsen Passport save money?
The Amagase Onsen Passport costs ¥1,200 for three tickets. One ticket generally covers one regular bath at a participating facility, and the current information lists eight participating venues. It is not a blanket pass for every private bath or upgrade.
Buying admission separately to Seitenkaku and Bara no Yu comes to ¥1,100, so the passport costs more if those are your only two stops. Seitenkaku plus Sanso Tensui costs ¥1,500, which makes the passport cheaper on paper and leaves you a third ticket. Count the baths you’re sure you will use before buying; the “bath-hopping” label alone does not make it a better deal. Ask whether a private-bath session accepts the passport before building a plan around one.
