A Half-Day Onsen Walk from Beppu Station: Four Baths, Two Stops Is Plenty
Plan a Beppu Station onsen walk with four nearby baths, realistic timing, walking distances, cleaning breaks and bathing options.

For a first walk-in onsen visit from JR Beppu Station, pair Kaimonji Onsen with Takegawara Onsen. Kaimonji has two pools at different temperatures and showers; Takegawara adds the historic bathhouse or its sand bath. With only an hour, Ekimae Koto Onsen is about two minutes from the station. Furoisen is another nearby option, with a larger bathing area and accessible equipment.
All four are shared indoor baths. None has a reservable private bath or a public outdoor pool, and each has its own cleaning break or regular closure day. Pick two at most: bathing, washing, drying off and walking between facilities takes longer than the map suggests.

Bring small change, a towel and your own basic toiletries. Admission does not mean every bath supplies them, and Takegawara’s ordinary bath does not have standard showers. A flexible first visit: Kaimonji, then Takegawara
Kaimonji is roughly five minutes from the station. Its hot and cooler pools make it easier to choose a comfortable temperature, and showers are available. The bath is open 6:30 am–10:30 pm, with a daily cleaning break from 2–3 pm; the second Monday is usually its monthly closure, though holiday schedules can change. Adult admission is ¥250.
After bathing, leave an hour or so for a drink, a meal or simply getting dressed and dry before heading to Takegawara. That pause also makes the second bath feel like a separate stop instead of a hurried round of changing rooms.
Takegawara is about a ten-minute walk away. Its current building dates to 1938. The regular bath costs ¥300; the sand bath costs ¥1,500 and is open to visitors aged six and up. Guests change into a yukata and lie on heated sand while staff cover them.
The sand bath takes up to eight people at a time. It does not take reservations, and reception may close early when busy. Last listed reception is 9:30 pm, so avoid scheduling it just before a train or dinner booking.
The regular bath and sand bath are separate experiences, with separate spring-analysis records. Published source temperatures describe the spring at the source, not the water in the bathing pool.
If heat or accessibility is the main concern
Furoisen and Kaimonji both have hot and cooler sections, so either works for someone who prefers to ease into a shared bath. Furoisen is also listed by Beppu City as having the largest pool among its municipal baths. Its renovated facility includes an entrance ramp, lift, bath-use wheelchair and grab rails. These features are useful to ask about when travelling with an older companion or someone with limited mobility; they do not confirm that every route or transfer will work for every visitor.
Furoisen is about five minutes from the station and charges ¥250 for adults. Like Kaimonji, it opens 6:30 am–10:30 pm and closes for cleaning from 2–3 pm. Its usual monthly closure is the first Monday, subject to holiday changes. Kaimonji’s second-Monday closure and Furoisen’s first-Monday closure make it easy to mix them up, so check the city closure calendar before setting out.
If bathing twice is too much, choose one. Furoisen has the larger bathing pool; Kaimonji is the simpler first stop if you want showers. Add Takegawara when its 1938 building or sand bath is part of the plan.
Arriving between 2 and 3 pm? Kaimonji and Furoisen shut during that hour for cleaning; visitors cannot enter the building. Takegawara or Ekimae Koto may work instead, but check each bath’s own hours and closure day before walking over.
A quick dip before a train
Ekimae Koto Onsen is the closest option, about two minutes from JR Beppu Station. Its Taisho-era Western-style exterior dates to 1924, and the upstairs also has simple lodging. Adult entry is ¥250. The listed regular hours are 8 am–11 pm; when overnight guests are staying, hours may extend to 6 am–midnight. The first Monday of each month is the usual closure day.
At the entrance, visitors choose either the hotter or cooler bath; admission does not allow switching between the two. The bath has showers, and towel, sauna and bathing-supply details can vary, so confirm on site if one of those is essential. Leave enough time to get dressed, dry your hair and walk back to the platform. A 40-minute gap is not 40 minutes in the water.
When a station-area bath is the wrong fit
These four are shared, gender-separated baths. Current Beppu visitor listings mark them as tattoo-permitted, but that does not make them private. If you need a closed room for a partner, child-care or privacy reasons, use the private-bath guide instead.
