Suginoi Hotel Beppu: Which Building Includes Sora-yu?

At Suginoi Hotel, the building on your booking determines whether you can use Sora-yu. All overnight guests can use Tanayu, the large terraced bath. Sora-yu, on the top floor of Sora-kan, is included for Sora-kan guests and for specific Hoshi-kan room categories—not every guest at the hotel. Niji-kan is the simpler-priced, family-oriented building, but its standard rooms do not include Sora-yu access.

This distinction matters most if you are choosing Hoshi-kan to save money. Its sea-side Standard room is the lower room tier that still includes Sora-yu; the mountain-side Standard does not. Check the exact room name on the plan before booking.

Tanayu is the shared onsen included with the stay

Tanayu is a five-level outdoor bath facing Beppu Bay, with additional tubs, a sauna and a cold plunge. Overnight guests can use it regardless of whether they stay in Sora-kan, Hoshi-kan or Niji-kan. In October through late March, its current hours are 6 am to midnight.

The spring is listed as sodium chloride / sulfate water. The facility also specifies dilution, heating, circulation and filtration, with chlorine-based sanitation. “Natural onsen” here should not be read as “free-flowing spring water.” The same classification and treatment apply to Sora-yu, so the building upgrade buys a second bath and its higher viewpoint, not a different water-treatment standard.

Sora-yu adds the view, but only during its opening windows

Sora-yu sits at the top of Sora-kan, about 250 metres above sea level, with views toward Beppu Bay, the city, Tsurumi-dake and Kannawa’s steam. In October through late March, it is open from 6 to 10 am and 3 pm to midnight. If you will use the bath only once, Tanayu may already be enough; the extra access is easier to justify if you want the higher view at night and again the next morning.

Room bathrooms are not a third onsen-access category. Some rooms have a bathtub and others a shower, but the hotel does not present those as private natural hot-spring baths. If you need a hot spring behind your own room door, compare Terrace Midoubaru’s all-room private baths instead.

Niji-kan suits compact stays; Sora-kan and Hoshi-kan offer more room

Many Niji-kan rooms are about 21 m². Twin and Double rooms have shower booths rather than bathtubs; the Loft room sleeps up to four, with guests making up some of the bedding themselves when three or more people stay. That can work well if the room is mainly for sleeping and the family plans to use Tanayu and the resort facilities. It is a real space constraint if you expect to spend the day in the room.

Hoshi-kan Standard rooms are around 35 m² and sleep up to four. Higher Hoshi-kan room categories add more space and beds, and some have a bathtub, but do not confuse a bathtub with an in-room hot spring. Check the building, side and exact room type as separate choices.

A private bath is available for an extra charge

Oita Go-yu has five private rooms and costs extra. It is open from 11 am to midnight. Same-day reservations start at 9 am at the Tanayu reception counter; last reception is 9 pm.

Listed weekday rates are ¥4,100 for four rooms and ¥5,500 for Take. Weekends and designated dates cost more. The private rooms suit mixed-gender parties or guests who prefer not to use a large shared bath. Public baths exclude guests with tattoos; whether the private rooms have a tattoo exception is unconfirmed, so check with the hotel.

Transport and seasonal facilities

The hotel runs a free shuttle to and from JR Beppu Station, but the final departure depends on the day. The current weekday timetable lists the last bus from the station at 6:40 pm and the last hotel departure at 6:20 pm. If you arrive later, allow for a taxi and check dinner timing. The hotel has about 900 free parking spaces, though each building uses a different arrival and parking arrangement; follow the hotel’s directions rather than continuing up the narrow road past the property.

The hotel currently lists Aqua Beat operations through November 1, 2026. Aqua Garden is a separate swimsuit area with its own schedule. Niji-kan has compact family rooms; allow for walks or use the internal shuttle between buildings, restaurants and baths.

Oita Prefecture bars mixed-gender bathing from age seven. Children may use an opposite-sex parent’s bath through age six. The Beppu area guide compares the hillside with the station and Kannawa.

Before paying, make sure the confirmation shows the building and room side you intended, plus Sora-yu access if you expect to use it. A room upgrade is not the same thing as an onsen upgrade, and a bathroom in the room is not a private spring bath.
