Hiroshima Station at Night: Which Onsen Can You Reach Without a Car?

Reach Ujina or Rakurakuen before 10 p.m. last reception; Ondo Onsen stays open later except Sundays, but its current fee is unconfirmed.

At night, the deciding detail is often not which bath has more features. It is whether you can reach the door before last reception and still get back to where you are staying. From Hiroshima Station, three options serve different timing and direction: Ujina Honoyu has the most direct station bus route, Ondo Onsen is the late downtown fallback on six nights of the week, and Rakurakuen is better when your plans already take you west.

If you still have time for a full spa visit: Ujina Honoyu

The operator lists Ujina Honoyu as open 9am–11pm, with last reception at 10pm. From Hiroshima Station, its access page gives a specific public-transport route: take the right-circulating Machinowa Loop bus 302 to Prefectural University of Hiroshima-mae, then walk about five minutes. The operator also lists the Hiroshima Port-bound tram to Ujina-nichome, followed by a ten-minute walk.

Adult admission for the full bathing area is ¥1,000 on weekdays, ¥1,100 on weekends and public holidays, and ¥1,200 on designated peak dates. That ticket includes the outdoor baths, sauna and cold bath. A cheaper ¥500 bath-only ticket is available, but it excludes those areas. If you are going for the open-air bath or sauna, compare the correct ticket rather than the lowest price shown in search results.

Work backwards from 10pm, not 11pm: arriving at the property by closing time is too late for a new entry. Because the bus and tram have their own timetables, check the journey for your date before leaving the station. The operator notes that unplanned maintenance closures can also occur.

If the large baths are about to stop admitting: Ondo Onsen

Ondo Onsen is the practical central-city alternative when a 10pm final reception at the bigger baths is no longer realistic. Hiroshima’s official tourism listing gives hours of 1pm–1am and a regular Sunday closure. From Hiroshima Station, take tram line 1, 2 or 6 to Hacchobori; the listed walk from there is about eight minutes.

Its official listing describes a natural sodium-chloride spring from about 850 metres underground, alongside sauna, jet, bubble and herbal baths. The facility closes every Sunday. Its page still shows prices last updated in April 2022; Hiroshima City’s controlled adult tariff for public baths is now ¥500, but Ondo has not posted a newer rate. Confirm its current charge before visiting.

Think about the return trip as well. Ondo stays open after many tram services have finished for the night; check your last ride before you head in, or plan for another way back to your accommodation.

If you are already west of the centre: Rakurakuen Honoyu

Rakurakuen Honoyu also operates 9am–11pm, with last reception at 10pm. The Hiroden Miyajima Line’s Rakurakuen stop is about a five-minute walk away; JR Itsukaichi Station is a longer walk, listed by the operator at 25 minutes. That makes the branch much easier to justify if your evening is already in Itsukaichi, Hatsukaichi or on the Miyajima side than if you are starting at Hiroshima Station late.

The full ticket includes more facilities than the ¥500 basic bath, which excludes the outdoor area, sauna and cold bath. The Korean-style jjimjilbang costs extra and closes at 10:30 p.m.; a late arrival may leave too little time to use it.

A quick timing check before you leave

  • Still comfortably ahead of 10pm: choose Ujina if you are in central Hiroshima; its station bus route is explicitly listed by the operator.
  • Too late for a 10pm last reception: consider Ondo on any day except Sunday, and verify the return journey.
  • Already travelling west: Rakurakuen is the more natural stop, provided you can reach it by 10pm.

These are planning windows, not fixed departure cutoffs. Travel time changes with the service and day, and the official pages do not guarantee that a connection will get you through the door before last reception. Check live transit times before setting off. For a closer look at the two Honoyu branches’ water and facilities, see the Ujina vs. Rakurakuen comparison. The Ondo Onsen guide covers its downtown facilities and price uncertainty in more detail; the city sento guide lists other neighbourhood choices.
