Hoshi Onsen Chojukan Without a Car: The Bus Connection That Makes a Day Trip Work

For April 1–December 15, 2026, buses connect Jomo-Kogen, Sarugakyo and Hoshi Onsen, leaving about two hours to bathe. Winter schedules differ.

Checked: September 27, 2026 Hoshi Onsen Chojukan is reachable by public transport, but a day visit depends on one tight transfer. For the current April 1–December 15, 2026 timetable, the practical sequence is Jomo-Kogen 8:58 a.m. → Sarugakyo 9:28 a.m. → Hoshi Onsen 11:20 a.m. After bathing, leave by the 2:23 p.m. town bus to make the 3:35 p.m. Sarugakyo-to-Jomo-Kogen service.

That leaves about two hours and forty minutes at the inn, before changing and walking to the bus stop. Day admission ends at 2 p.m., so this plan has little room for delays. The mountain bus from Sarugakyo accepts cash only; the first, regional bus leg accepts cash or a transport IC card.

The workable outbound connection

LegCurrent timetableWhat to know
Jomo-Kogen Station to Sarugakyo8:58–9:28 a.m.Kan-Etsu Kotsu Sarugakyo Line; use the seasonal 2026 schedule
Wait at SarugakyoAbout 1 hour 38 minutesDo not plan another bath; the next Hoshi Line bus misses Chojukan’s last-admission time
Sarugakyo to Hoshi Onsen11:06–11:20 a.m.Minakami town-operated Hoshi Line; cash only
Day-use bathing11:20 a.m.–2 p.m. at mostLast admission is 1:30 p.m.; earlier closure is possible if capacity is reached

There is a later regional bus from Jomo-Kogen that reaches Sarugakyo at 11:33 a.m. It misses the 11:06 Hoshi Line departure. The next town bus arrives after Chojukan’s 1:30 p.m. last-admission time, so it is not a workable day-trip alternative.

The wait at Sarugakyo is long, but it is part of the route rather than a connection you can safely compress. Keep close to the stop, leave time to find the town-bus boarding point and carry cash for that second leg.

Leave the bath on time for the return

The Hoshi Line leaves the inn at 2:23 p.m. and reaches Sarugakyo at 2:37 p.m. The next useful Kan-Etsu Kotsu service leaves Sarugakyo at 3:35 p.m. and reaches Jomo-Kogen at 4:09 p.m. This gives some buffer for a minor delay, but not enough to treat the 2 p.m. bathing cutoff as optional.

There is a later Hoshi Line bus at 3:33 p.m., but it reaches Sarugakyo after the 3:35 regional bus has left. Missing the 2:23 departure therefore makes the return journey substantially longer. Do not count on a taxi as a guaranteed rescue; contact a local operator in advance if you intend to use one.

Check the date before copying these times

The regional Sarugakyo timetable cited here is valid April 1 through December 15, 2026. Minakami’s official bus page says the route changes seasonally; the Hoshi Line timetable and the hotel’s own access page show older revision dates. From December 16 onward, do not reuse the times above. Check the current regional and town-bus schedules together, then confirm Chojukan’s day-use opening before travelling.

The inn normally does not accept day visitors on Wednesdays because of cleaning, and it lists additional unscheduled closures. Admission can also end early when the visitor limit is reached. See the day-trip guide for current bath access and prices. If this transfer feels too tight, the day trip vs. overnight comparison explains why staying can fit the area’s limited bus service better.
