Where to soak after Izumo Taisha: three routes that work

Plan an onsen stop after Izumo Taisha around your onward route: Kitayama near Kawato, Yurari toward Matsue, or Lamp no Yu by JR Izumo-shi Station.

Choose the bath around your next stop. Kitayama Onsen is closest by car and is also reachable by train plus a walk from Kawato Station. Yurari fits an evening heading toward Matsue. Lamp no Yu is convenient after you return to JR Izumo-shi Station.

Izumo Taisha closes its inner grounds at 7 p.m. A bath’s last-entry time does not tell you whether a train or bus will still be running when you finish.

One date-specific wrinkle: Kitayama has announced a full-day maintenance closure on October 1, 2026. It is open on September 28, the date checked here, but do not plan around its usual daily hours on October 1.

Give the shrine the earlier part of the day

Izumo Taisha’s current visiting hours are 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. The area behind the main sanctuary, including Sogasha, closes at 4:30 p.m.; anyone planning to visit that section should arrive well before the final hour. A quick visit and a slower circuit through the grounds do not take the same amount of time, so leave room for the shrine before adding a bath.

The easiest shape for a no-car day is shrine first, then a single onsen stop chosen around the next station or town. If you are driving, Kitayama is the obvious nearby option. There is no large day-use bath a few minutes’ walk from the shrine, so public-transport plans involve either a train-and-walk detour or returning to the station area.

Route A: Kitayama for a nearby finish

Kitayama is about an eight-minute drive from the shrine. It is the tidy choice if a car is already part of the day: finish the visit, drive over, bathe, then continue to your hotel or back toward central Izumo. General admission is ¥700 (about HK$35 / NT$143). The natural alkaline simple spring is indoors; the outdoor tub is an artificial high-concentration carbonated bath. There is also a sauna and cold bath.

Without a car, take the Ichibata Railway from Izumo Taisha-mae to Kawato Station. The adult fare is ¥400 (about HK$20 / NT$82), and Kitayama is roughly a 10-minute walk from the station. The walk is manageable with a light day bag, but it is still an out-and-back walk after bathing. For anyone carrying luggage or avoiding extra walking, a taxi from the shrine is the less tiring option; confirm availability locally rather than assuming one will be waiting outside.

Bathing hours are 10 a.m.–9:30 p.m., with last entry at 9 p.m. The facility says it is generally open year-round but closes several times a year for inspections. Check its latest notice, especially for a planned maintenance day such as October 1, 2026.

Route B: Yurari when Matsue is next

For an evening heading east, Yurari in Hirata can turn the bath into a leg of the journey rather than a return trip. From Izumo Taisha-mae, ride toward Kawato and continue on the North Matsue Line to Unshu-Hirata; the adult fare from the shrine is ¥570 (about HK$29 / NT$116). Yurari is about a 10-minute walk from Unshu-Hirata Station. After the bath, walk back to the station and continue toward Matsue.

The walk on both ends matters. This is not a station-platform bath, and the railway’s weekday and holiday schedules differ. Check the exact onward train before entering the bath, especially in the evening or on a holiday. Yurari’s last reception is 9 p.m.; the bath may remain open later than the train you need.

Yurari is open for bathing from 10:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., with last reception at 9 p.m. Its operator describes a large rock-built outdoor bath, individual outdoor tubs, indoor baths and a far-infrared sauna; the spring is listed as 100% source-flow. It is a better fit when the larger outdoor-bath setup is part of the plan. If the night ends back in central Izumo, travelling east to Hirata and then doubling back adds distance without helping the itinerary.

Route C: Lamp no Yu after returning to Izumo Station

If your next connection is from JR Izumo-shi Station, return there first and use Lamp no Yu beside the south exit. The Ichibata fare from Izumo Taisha-mae to Dentetsu Izumo-shi Station is ¥550 (about HK$28 / NT$112), or take the direct Ichibata Bus service from the shrine terminal to JR Izumo-shi Station. The rail and JR stations are adjacent, but they are separate operators and platforms; leave a little time to move between them.

Lamp no Yu reopened on September 17, 2026, after construction on its sauna and cold bath. Standard hours are 10 a.m.–10 p.m., with last reception at 9:30 p.m. It usually closes on the first Wednesday of each month; if that Wednesday is a public holiday, the closure moves to the following Wednesday.

Use Lamp no Yu when you are already returning to the station. It is not a useful detour from Hirata if Matsue is your destination.

The direct bus is useful if you prefer not to change trains, but the published route pages link to timetables that should be checked against the day you travel. Izumo City’s bus information page is updated as services change and links the current operator schedules and the Matsue–Izumo Bus Navi service. Avoid relying on an old screenshot or assuming a bus will line up with the bath’s last-entry time.

Work backward from the connection, not the bath’s closing time

Three cut-offs matter: the shrine closes at 7 p.m., the baths stop admitting visitors at 9 or 9:30 p.m., and the last train or bus may leave earlier. Railway schedules differ between weekdays and holidays.

Yurari is about a 10-minute walk from its station. Kitayama is also about a 10-minute walk from Kawato Station; check whether your train requires a change there. Allow for both walks and confirm a return connection before bathing. Arrange a taxi in advance if missing that connection would leave you stranded.

The direct bus back to JR Izumo-shi is another option after the shrine, but service frequency and last departures depend on the date and route. Check the operator’s timetable on the day, and leave enough time for the ride back before choosing Lamp no Yu. During holiday periods or service changes, recheck both the bus and railway schedules; special-event trains can supplement the normal timetable without replacing it.

For a simple decision: drive to Kitayama after the shrine; take the train to Yurari when you are continuing toward Matsue; choose Lamp only after reaching JR Izumo-shi Station. If the last connection is tight, skip the extra bath or stay overnight in Izumo rather than turning a relaxing stop into a race across town.
