Kunimi Onsen Day Trip: What’s Open, How to Get There and Which Inn to Choose

Kunimi is a seasonal mountain stop with no regular bus; compare Ishizuka’s pre-opening bath with Moriyamaso and check winter road closure dates.

Checked: September 28, 2026

The emerald water gets the photographs, but the first thing to check before driving up is the operating status. Ishizuka Ryokan resumed day bathing on June 19, 2026 after repair work, with a clear caveat: it is still a pre-opening, and not all construction is finished. Moriyamaso is the other current choice, normally open from early May to mid-November.

The former third option, the town-run Kunimi Sanso, has been closed since fiscal 2021. Old listings that still show its hours or admission price are not a reason to set off.

Pick based on the kind of visit you want

Ishizuka Ryokan is the inn most closely associated with Kunimi’s vivid green water. Its 2026 reopening service remains provisional, so call before travelling.

Moriyamaso is easier to plan as a full day out. It serves simple mountain-vegetable and char dishes; phone ahead if lunch is central to your plan.

The difference is less about a few hundred yen than certainty. Moriyamaso publishes a fuller day-use offer and a longer bathing window. Ishizuka may be the point of the trip for visitors who have been waiting for it to reopen, but ask what facilities are available on your date rather than relying on old photos or pre-repair descriptions.

What the baths are like

Moriyamaso describes its spring as a sulfur-containing sodium bicarbonate spring with a pH of 6.8. The inn says the source water is clear and the bath turns green when sunlight activates algae present in the water. The shade can vary with light and conditions; a travel photo is not a guarantee of exactly the same colour on arrival.

The indoor bath is made of hiba wood and has showers, soap and shampoo. The outdoor bath is mixed, with separate changing rooms. The inn permits bath towels and sets aside women-only bathing periods, but does not publish the hours on its bathing page. Ask when you call if you need to plan around them.

Ishizuka’s current public information is much narrower because the reopening is provisional. The local tourism association confirms that day bathing has resumed and gives the hours, while the inn’s latest service details should come from its own blog or by phone. Historical facility information should not be treated as a description of the baths currently open.

Getting up the mountain takes planning

There is no regular public bus to either inn in the current access information. Moriyamaso says a taxi from JR Shizukuishi or Tazawako Station takes about 30 minutes. Ishizuka currently offers no shuttle. If you take a taxi, arrange the return as well; don’t assume a car will be waiting in this remote area.

By car, check the road before leaving. Prefectural Route 266, the access road to Kunimi Onsen, closes over winter. The previous closure ran from November 14, 2025 until noon on May 5, 2026. Those are last winter’s dates, not a forecast for the coming season. Moriyamaso’s own operating season also ends around mid-November, so confirm both the inn and road status in autumn.

Kunimi works best as a planned stop for drivers, hikers returning from Mount Akita-Komagatake, or a group willing to share a taxi. If you simply want an uncomplicated soak from Morioka without a car, Amihari or Morioka Tsunagi are easier bases; see the Amihari day-trip guide and Morioka Tsunagi day-trip guide.

Before you go

  • Call Ishizuka Ryokan to confirm that day bathing is operating on your date and ask which facilities are open during the pre-opening.
  • Confirm Moriyamaso’s seasonal opening and current fees. It accepts cash only.
  • Book taxis in both directions; neither inn is a casual bus stop.
  • Check Route 266 notices before driving, especially from late autumn through spring.
