Toshichi Onsen Saiunso: A Seasonal Day Trip to Hachimantai’s High Country
Plan a Toshichi Onsen Saiunso day trip around the 2026 seasonal bus, bath hours, road closure and mixed-bath rules in Hachimantai’s high country.
Toshichi Onsen Saiunso is easiest to justify if you are already heading to the Hachimantai high country for hiking, the Dragon Eye or autumn colour. The sulfur bath and mud-edged outdoor pools feel close to the mountain landscape; the visit is less like a polished resort spa than a stop at a seasonal high-altitude hot spring. Getting there from Morioka just for a quick soak takes most of the day, so the bus window matters.
The 2026 bus works as a set window
The 2026 Hachimantai Nature Excursion Bus runs from April 18 to October 25. In the summer–autumn timetable, it leaves Morioka at 9:10 a.m. and reaches Toshichi at 11:19. The return bus departs at 2:41 p.m., arriving in Morioka at 5:15. That leaves about three hours and 22 minutes at the inn—enough for a bath and lunch, but little room if you miss the bus.
The road from Horai-kyo toward Matsukawa Onsen remains closed after a collapse, so the bus uses the Hachimantai Aspite Line instead of the Jukai Line. Check the official 2026 PDF for your travel date; service days and dates matter.
Iwate Kenpoku also sells a ¥4,300 day-trip package, valid May 8 through October 25, 2026. It covers the round-trip bus from Morioka, lunch, a bath ticket and a small souvenir. The restaurant’s last order is 1:30 p.m., so do not assume you can bathe first and eat at the last minute. The package ends before the inn’s usual late-October season does; the facility has not published an exact final operating date for 2026.
What the bath ticket covers—and what is unclear
Day-use bathing is listed from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Adults pay ¥700; elementary-school children and younger pay ¥350. Saiunso describes its water as a simple sulfur spring supplied directly without dilution or circulation.
The listed source temperature is 91°C, not the temperature of the bath. The inn usually operates from late April to late October, but has not published an exact final operating date for 2026.
The outdoor bathing area is part of the appeal: the spring is sulfurous and milky, with natural ground and mud around some pools. That also means footing, wind, leaves, insects and weather are part of the visit; do not expect the controlled finish of a city spa. The operator warns against bathing in the nearby wild-spring area around Oku-Toshichi, where very hot water can erupt. Stay within the marked facility.
The outdoor bathing arrangements are not interchangeable. Women may wear a large wrap towel or bathing garment in the mixed outdoor bath. Its women-only hour is 7:30–8:30 p.m., after day-use hours; a separate women-only outdoor bath is also available.
Some gender-separated outdoor baths are for overnight guests only. Saiunso does not specify which pools the ¥700 day ticket includes, so confirm before choosing a bath. Its public pages also give no tattoo rule or price for a large bathing towel.
Driving means planning around the mountain road
Saiunso lists about 60 minutes from Matsuo-Hachimantai Interchange, 70 minutes from Kazuno-Hachimantai Interchange and two hours from Tazawako Station. Free parking is available for 45 cars, but there is no nearby gas station; refuel before climbing into the mountains.
The road closure between Horai-kyo and Matsukawa Onsen prevents through-travel on that stretch. Iwate Prefecture’s target is to restore it after the spring 2027 snowmelt, not to a confirmed opening date. The mountain roads also have seasonal and overnight restrictions. Check the latest road and facility notices before driving, especially late in the season.
For a different Iwate day-bath option with easier lowland access, see Obonai at Kindaichi Onsen. For other Tohoku choices, compare the Amihari Onsen guide or Geto Onsen day-trip guide.
What staying overnight adds
Day visitors can use the public indoor baths and the mixed outdoor area open to them. Some gender-separated outdoor baths are reserved for overnight guests, who can also use the mixed bath during its women-only hour, 7:30–8:30 p.m., after day-use hours.
Staying overnight gives you the late light, night sky and early-morning mountain views. The Morioka bus limits day-trippers to just over three hours at the inn. A day visit suits a bath and lunch; staying over gives more time in the mountain setting.
